I voted for Peter but was going to vote for Mike, or Anthony Philips if he was included, because he created that guitar sound.

My heart says Peter Gabriel, my head said Banksy.......
Tony Banks got my vote.
Going back to the Ray wilson comments tho, I must say having seen the boy wilson perform on a couple of occaisions I was mightily impressed, he has a huge talent, I could have watched him sing on all night, but with reference to this poll, the 25 or so years of Genesis prior the the rather brief Ray Wilson era really counted in terms of genesis importance more.

My favorite Genesis MAN is Phil Collins. He is just the most sympathetic one, I'd really like to chat with him! 
But musically I much prefer Tony Banks' and Peter Gabriel's stuff. I like Hackett too and even Rutherford had his moments...  Can't decide.  |

I think historically the hatred for Phil Collins didn't start till the mid 80s when he seemed to stoop to release anything to sell a record. At the time of Duke and ATTW3 he was just a part of a band that was becoming less complex and was still liked and respected . But by Invisible Touch the band had become Phil Collins backing band and his singing which isn't bad had become nauseous.My vote went to Steve Hackett for maintaining artistic integrity and dignity when the other band members mistreated him.

Tony Banks, I like most of his solo albums as well. For me he's the main writer.
Steve Hackett would be my nr. 2. Ant Phillips my nr. 3. Both guitarists are very imaginative, have a progressive attitude, and made some great solo albums as well.
I like Collins for his fabulous drumming and his wonderful singing, and even for some of his compositions. I do hate some of his lyrics on the later albums, and even some of his drumming.
Gabriel has a great artistic personality. I'm not very much into his solo stuff, though.
Rutherford is my least favourite Genesis member, although I like some of his compositions, and his first solo album.
(I'm not talking about the early drummers, the last singer and the live band members)

Mike Rutherford for me. He dosn't get the credit he deserves, both as a songwriter & musician standpoint. He plays a lot of 6 & 12 string parts as well as bass on early Genesis songs, more than a lot of people realise. His Mike & The Mechanics songs show that he was responsible for a lot of Genesis's great melodies.
Hackett just wasn't prominent enough for me during his career with Genesis & was mostly overshadowed by Banks. Hackett's best work is post-Genesis.
Gabriel was a true pioneer but his singing can grate at times. Again, I prefer his solo career.

I voted for Banks. While they are all great and unique musicians in their own way, Banks is the heart and soul of Genesis.

TONY BANKS
Not a grandiose or pompous keyboard performer ala Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson, (Well, maybe his bobbing up & down head ), Banks is in a league all his own. He is the Genesis sound and style. A consumate keyboard player, stylist, and songwriter. And I'm not just limiting this to the Gabriel era.
I can't think of any other Prog keyboard player that can claim so many memorable solos. From the energetic opening organ riff in "The Knife" to mellotron madness in "The Fountain Of Salmacis" "Can-Utility & The Coastliners" and of course "Watcher Of The Skies."
An organ & synth master, the amphetamine-like organ solo in Apocalypse in 9/8. The quirky solos in "Robbery, Assault & Battery," and "Wot Gorilla?"
Then there's all the great piano solos and work:
"Firth Of Fifth,", "Trick Of The Tail"(the title song), "One For The Vine," The haunting piano solo opening to The Lamb. In fact Banks keyboards pretty much carries the whole Lamb Lies Down On Broadway from beginning to end. "In The Cage," "Carpet Crawlers," "Anyway," "The Lamia," the solo in "The Colony Of Slipperman," and finally "Riding The Scree." I've always felt Banks beats Wakeman and all the rest of them everytime in both technique and creativity.
My list can go on and on, but I save the best for last. The one I keep playing over and over, and probably always will. My favorite one. "The Cinema Show."

I am a huge fan of Hackett in Genesis and solo. I may have voted for Phil if the band had quit after SEBTP. But I have to agree with anyone in this thread who feels that Banks was the backbone and soul of the band. Ultimately, it's Banks for me.
