This is a very good idea, and it will spare both members and newcomers much confusion. It would allow us to remove, for example, all Queen's non-Prog albums of the '80s, aswell as the non-Prog Genesis albums, and allow the site and its users to focus on Prog. We are, after all, not here to review Pop albums, are we?
|
I also like this idea a lot, only one slight problem, what happens when there are one or two great progressive songs on the removed non prog albums?
But it would be great to clear out the rubbish, Hot Space etc |
It would be great to move out all the non-Prog albums, but, as far as I have managed to understand, this is not the policy of the site... The discography should be full according to it. So, it is impossible...

policy is; once in...always in ... and this is progressive
music.... where you go, is often as important or sometimes as
interesting as where you have been. Doesn't hurt a damn thing
anyway. The more albums we have here makes it look that much better on
the front page hahahh. Anyone who goes out and buys a copy of We
Can't Dance looking for a great Genesis prog album.... deserves what he
gets

OK, the whole bands output goes in (Genesis, Queen etc)
Now for my great idea
If we were to put one or two "Most Proggish" albums of
Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow, Hendrix etc in the Archives it could solve the problem.
Sad Wings of Destiny-Judas Priest for example.
Well I think I´ve solved the problem (Time for a beer and a pat on the back)

Never mind, I think this site has done a major justice to music in general.
Prog is prog and there will always be the areas of grey. That's what makes it so good.

exactly... I heard people say that the site would go to hell if ELO was included... the Beatles.. etc..
doesn't mean we can not disagree of course and voice our opinions
to that effect... but to have a narrow view of what is and is not prog
sort of defeats the whole premise of prog doesn't it. We as
individual listeners 'listen' to these albums and groups then evaluate
and interpret what we have heard. There is no set rule to what is
and is not prog. The site should reflect that.

Well as is obvious, I'm a 'newbie' to this site but here's the opinion anyway.
I think we (meaning westernized humans) spend way too much time trying to classify and organize things. Adding more sub-genres may just be going a little bit too far. If anything I'd like to see a contraction of the genres. In general I agree with the previous posts that the "Italian Symphonic Prog" genre is unnecessary. As a newcomer to the site I was interested in finding bands/artists that were in general, progressively minded in their composition and playing styles. So rather than bombard with a whole bunch of sub-genres I believe a simplication is in order.
Art/Symphonic Rock (guys like Yes, KC, Genesis, ELP, all those Italian dudes, etc...)
Electronica (Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, etc...)
Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Opeth)
Fusion (basically reserved for bands that embark onto dramatically differing styles that cross the scope of the three genres above e.g. Mr. Bungle)
that would be my whole list, perhaps that will bother you guys but one plus to this would be an elimination of many fringe bands that really lack the depth to be on these archives.
Generally, the reason that these sub-genres pop up is because a band took existing styles and forged their own sound that seems distinctive enough that it merits its own genre, but I contend that really they still sit within a general branching style. Example, MAGMA, did an excellent job in crafting their own sound, language, etc.. however they still are in my mind Art/Symphonic Rock.
So there it is, stomp on it if you wish.

yep Micky, I think we have to realize we are flogging a long gone, dead and buried horse
Maybe, instead of begging for Rainbow to be accepted into the Archives (month after month) I should concentrate on my marriage a bit more
