Songs like Cinderella Man make AFTK a more varied affair than Animals. Even Pigs On The Wing sounds like coming from under the same claustrophobic dome. Amazing achievement, but I also like that bit of fresh irony in Geddy's vocals.

Love both but Kings gets the vote

I don't get the feeling that Hawkwind is trying hard to be Prog (at least from the classic era stuff I know). I have got that feeling with quite a few bands, especially modern ones (cookie-cutter Prog, Prog influences too much on their sleeves, perhaps). Often I think a good band does not seek to make Prog or be Prog, but it's just open and more flexible with ideas and form which makes it somehow progressive.

I like the album. but I kind of got that feeling with Magma's KA and Magma when I saw it live. Like it's trying to please a Progressive Rock audience, lacks as much originality as I would like, and is quite by-numbers.

I took don't always go for the most obvious Proggy stuff and most of what I listen to is not even included in PA. I don't care that mush if something is Prog nor see Prog as some badge of quality. I do like progressive music often, but generic Prog can be a real turn off for me. Death to Prog! Long live art music. ;)

I have heard classic Hawkwind that I would have thought an ELP fan might like.

I grew up liking Sweet, Queen, The Who and Wings before I got to ELP (and then Genesis, Yes etc). Never was into the quitar bands particularly or anything from the blues rock spectrum (Led Zep inc). Hawkwind were a bit of weird one but I was never that keen on them until I heard Spirit Of The Age. Anyway going round in circles a bit. The appeal of modern prog for me is just how much there is out there. I have listened to Beth Gibbons and The Last Dinner Party recently (and I like both) but also listening to some 'cookie cutter' and even managed to get through the whole of the recent lobsterfight album which I would expect the avant crowd to be all over (it's like The Killers and Black Midi had an evil baby together lol). I'm up for a lot of things. Diversity in music is very important to me. That's the most important thing ultimately. What I like doesn't matter really. Keep me entertained!

Excellent albums and I love them, but if I were to compare them (arbitrarily by the way.... ), ‘Pigs’ would be on a par with ‘Xanadu’; ‘Sheep’ one step below ‘A Farewell to Kings’; ‘Pigs on the Wings Part 1/2’ one step above ‘Closer to the Heart’; and ‘Dogs’ way above ‘Cinderella Man’, ‘Madrigal’ and ‘Cygnus X-1’, so for me ‘Animals’ wins not by KO, but clearly by points.
