Thoughts from page one, more later.

Shadowyzard

Never heard of either of these artists before. I think the only Turkish musician I've known this far is Erkin Koray (who is amazing!). Original is cool pop disco rather typical of its time I think with nice funky basslines. Will have to check out more Barış Manço later. Modernized cover is good fun for a while but not my kind of stuff really. If the guy actually does everything he seems to do simultaneously, you must really admire his skill.

Cristi

Aside from "Metal Heart" and "Balls to the Wall" I'm not at all familiar with Accept and I guess this is not them at their most typical? Cover is a nice surprise as I expected something heavier from Therion (as I did from Accept).

I prophesy disaster

Lovely offbeat oddball pop, both the original and the cover. It's a pity the USA had such a short career. Snakefinger is a big favourite of mine and he really makes this song his own.

BaldFriede

Original is of course one of the most famous rock songs and deservedly so. Barbara Dennerlein turns it into something stylistically quite different with success. I can see what's the fascination here, but not my kind of stuff.

Then it's my own choices. A spontaneous decision as I was listening to Type O Negative at the time.

TCat

Not familiar with the song before. Original is great, I love how it grows towards the end and there's some excellent bass playing there. Cover is in more modern americana style. Not bad but I prefer the original.

The Anders

It's been ages since I saw 8 1/2 (or any Fellini film for that matter). Very fun and very soundtrackish song. The cover is even more fun!

Snicolette

Nice pop/rock song. I think I prefer the cover just slightly over the original.

mathman0806

War Pigs is my favourite Black Sabbath song. I knew the cover version already as well and I think they do an excellent job. It might've been even better if they had left the guitar out and gone with just the horns.

To continue on with the BS, there is the story of Jazz Sabbath. About 16 minutes long.

This clip gives the "original" version of Iron Man (Derek the Ironing Man).

This was released last year and done by Adam Wakeman (son of Rick). Also a touring keyboardist/guitarist for Sabbath and Ozzy.

First impressions of Page Two Entries:  Wow.  This is gonna be another terribly difficult one.

George:  Out of Competition, mashup Beyonce ft Kendrick Lamar “Freedom”  Begins with some Farfisa sounding organ then Beyonce sings with her diva-style vocals, a song of rebellion and a call for freedom.  Spoken part in the final third part.  Kinda liked it until then, not fond of speaking in music much, but could hear how this speaks to many.  Rage Against the Machine “Freedom”  Hard rock sound mixing it up with hip-hop.  Driving beat and speaking-style vocals.  I liked the guitar solo in the middle, even though in general, this is not my style.  Mashup:  Brass Agains ft Sophia Urista “Freedom”  Really have fun listening to these guys, they cover heavy music really well, and I like this lady’s voice, it’s more “natural,” sounding to me than Beyonce’s.  I much prefer this to either of the originals.  Brass Against Bonus of “Rusty Cage”, again with Sophia Urista.  I really like her vocals!  And this ensemble.  Creative way of switching up heavy rock.

Logan:  Julee Cruise “Into the Night”  I actually remember this one from the show, being a big fan, fittingly eerie.  Ghostly female vocals over soft percussion and keyboards.  Deeper key sounds about halfway in.  Orchestral surprise near the end.  Cover by Xiu Xiu:  Sharper percussion opens and strong orchestral hits, with electric guitar lead and high bell sounds.  Much more forceful than the original in feel.  Makes me think of if Clannad were to do a tortured sort of song, with the layers and the slightly obscured vocals.  Deep “Twin Peaks,” underwater type guitar lead about halfway in.  I like this one a lot.

Ronstein:  Genesis “For Absent Friends”  Of course very familiar with this classic.  Wistful, sweet song, that feels so very charmingly English to me.  Covered by Richard Sinclair  This one much more straight-forward, without the effects on the vocals.  Lovely piano joined by guitar and flute-y voices?  Or keys?  Not sure how they are doing the effect, but it’s very fitting for the piece.

Cristi:  Spandau Ballet “Through the Barricades”  Synth and pretty plucked guitar begin the tune.  Wistful song, honouring sacrifices.  Soulful sax solo near the end of the tune.  Cover by Dida Drăgan şi Compact Născută sunt să cânt.  This time a woman takes the mic, to very good effect.  They go for a more dramatic midsection here.  Moving ballad, no matter which way it’s done.

Lorenzo:  Paolo Conte “Via Con Me”  This one feels a bit sarcastic, darkly bright, if that makes any sense.  Love the break with the vibes and the flutes (?).  Seems as though it could be part of a musical.  Covered by Negri per caso:  This is even bouncier and jazzier than the original, with a chorus of vocalists supporting the male lead vocalist.  It’s a fun piece.  Either way, I can see choreography involved, also.  It’s very catchy.

^ Thanks, Snicolette. I'm very glad that you could appreciate the cover version. I've been somewhat nervously anticipating reaction.

By the way, I feel very unsure about how I will be voting based on the ones I covered (listened to all of those three times already, but I think it's going to need at least two more spins). All have merit in their own ways, and I will be judging how the cover compares and contrasts with the original more than how much I like the original, if that makes sense. Or just go with my gut at the time, which is how I usually do it no matter how many angles I think of to approach things. Think it through, then throw that away and just go with it is often my way. All of the music has opened up more and more the more I spun it.

Yes, this one is more difficult and I'm not taking into consideration if I know the original or not, this time...more, how much do I like the cover.

A couple of quick comments before I'm off to work.

Logan

Twin Peaks, Lynch, Badalamenti, Julee Cruise - love all of them. The song is so connected to that whole "Lynchian" feel of being in a dream that is slightly disturbing and anything can happen, beautiful or ugly things. Excellent jump scare orchestra hit. I've been meaning to check out Xiu Xiu for a long time. Why I haven't done it yet, I really don't know, as this sounded pretty much as I expected them to sound like. Can't beat the original but that's not the point. Very good cover and another great new find for me from this poll.

Ronstein

Short pastoral ditty, classic of course. I think it works better in the album context than as an individual song. Cover version does a good job, nothing more, nothing less.

So many great cover songs out there....hard to choose just one pair...I loved the old stuff from the mid and late 60's...one of my favorite early 45's ,,,,and a cool art rock cover by you know who.
This is my  nomination of two songs.

As to those not familiar with Barbara Dennerlein : All the bass in her tracks is played on the pedals of her organ at the same time she plays the keys.

You can hear a part of the original song in the film French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline:

First listen through Page Three:

Lewian:  Since first entry on other page was not In Competition:  The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows”  Of course, again, very familiar and also one of my fave Beatles tunes and LPs.  Very esoteric, experimental, psychedelic piece.  Cover by Daniela Andrade: Here on solo electric guitar, she does have a little bit of a lisp, not sure if it’s intentional or not.  Still keeps the dreamy feel of the piece, there is a nice chorus with herself a couple of times, way back in the mix, with a tiny bit of some kind of keys underpinning that part.  Lovely and turns it into another thing, entirely, in this singer/songwriter mode

Mike's Addition:  Cover of “Crazy Train,” by the Louisville Leopard Percussionists: Here a bunch of cool kids on vibes and drums, some keys and bass for variety.  What a lot of fun, especially the soloists!  It made me happy, too.  😊

Tancos:  Welcome to these polls, Tancos!  Django Reinhardt “Rythym Future”  Killer gypsy jazz guitarist (duh) just having a little bit of fun, here.  Wonderful, comedic yet also virtuosic piece of music, performed by a master and accompanied by a clarinet, I believe.  Now on to the cover, by Atomic Ape:  This one has more forward percussion and instead of clarinet, saxophone.  Guitars are electric here. Definitely the same song, but dressed in different clothes.  I especially enjoyed the final third, where everyone cuts loose, even more than previously.  Excellent!

Tapfret:  Black Sabbath “Fairies Wear Boots”  Also very familiar with this one (people love to cover Sabbath, don’t they?).  Fun to see those youngsters in this live video.  Covered by miRthkon:  This cover is very different, starting with horns, will be interested to see where they take it.  The horns continue on, repeating, as the guitars and drums kick in FULL force, then they drop out and resurface sporadically as the song continues.  The vocalist takes the job on with a bit more melodic of a vocal than Ozzy, yet staying true to the lead vocal melody.  About 2/3rds in they do a very creative vocal juxtaposed with the repeating horns once again.  Really an intriguing take.  The Louisville Leopard Percussionists take on YYZ  by Rush:  More of these great kids on their vibes, what complicated stuff they have taken on, they are just amazing.  And not only because they’re kids.  This one made me just as happy at Mike’s.  😊

Thanks Hiram for the thoughtful commentary.

I particularly liked Twin Peaks for the Badalamenti music, but definitely appreciate the Cruise (and others) music too. I've come to appreciate it more. I was the same with Xiu Xiu as I'd read things about the music at this site years ago but only very recently started listening as I came across that Twin Peaks themed album by accident (when looking into 2016 albums at rateyourmusic) and am a big fan of Twin Peaks.

This is the first track on the album, in case anyone is interested (it could be more unique):

The original Badalementi version was my nomination for an earlier poll in this series about TV soundtracks.

And Lorenzo, thanks for the video (had seen the film before and interesting to hear it now in that context).

The deadline is this Sunday (till Monday, in other words). We are not doing formal business here, so a couple of hours' delay won't be a big issue, but thus you risk of losing votes as some of us might be quick to vote.

I'll note the nicknames, together with the nominations so PLEASE place your 2 nominations in your ORIGINAL post. If there are more than 2 songs in your original post, I'll put the first two, among the options. Thanks.

And to sum it up with extras on Page Four and dr wu23:

George:  Thanks for the info re Jazz Sabbath, btw.  I love what they do with the Sabs material.

BaldFriede: Cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows,” by 801:  Begins with repeating guitar line and snapping bass, adding in wavering synths, definitely bringing psych to a meeting with electronics.  Vocals are reminiscent of the original, especially when they get to the second verse.  Extra cool that this was done live, obviously in the hands of pros.

Logan:  Xiu Xiu, cover of “Laura Palmer’s Theme”  I like this one, it’s just as somber as the original but a bit more up-front, although it lacks some of the delicacy that I felt fit the young girl’s untimely death.

dr wu23: Dobie Gray “The In Crowd”  Great early sixties pop song with a stellar vocalist.  😊  I remember we all watched “Shindig,” so I might even have seen this.  Classic.  Covered by Bryan Ferry: Another class act, Mr Ferry.  Here, he gives it a much more late 70’s, early 80’s rock feel, more driving guitars and quavering vocals.  Super-cool fingersnaps and strong horn section.  Made me smile.  😊

So this is from where I left.

Hiram
Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" is one of several songs I knew in advance. I still struggle to get Black Sabbath. I'm aware of the impact they have had, but the music does little for me; maybe you just have to be a heavy fan... The Type O Negative version begins with some very creepy sound effects. Also it contains spoken words rather than singing - until the tempo change. Again: not for me, but tastes differ.

BaldFriede pt. 2
"Thoth" (original) starts with some tick-tock sounds and a flute of sorts. Then enter a beat, and later an electronically manipulated speaking voice. I like it, but I think I would have to hear it some more times. The other version doesn't sound that different sonically (it appears to be the same artist), but it's a different composition of course. Once again there's spoken word. I liked the first version much better.

TCat
Unicorn - "No Way Out of Here". I didn't know this one. I'm undecided as what to think of it at this point. Maybe it requires a relisten. It sounds like it's from the 1970's. I like some of the guitar work, but I find the lead vocals a bit anonymous. Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell: I think I like this version better, especially the transition to the chours. A more sparse use of the pedal steel would do good. Not that I don't like pedal steel, but it would be more effective if it just came in once in a while. Good song in any case.

Soundgarden - "Rusty Cage". I once had Superunknown copied to a cassette tape, but I only rarely listened to it. The Badmotorfinger album I haven't actually heard before, so this song is new to me. Apart from Nirvana who were usually very melodic, grunge is not so much my thing. Not that it's a bad song in any way, but were are in the area of heavy guitar riffs and hard rock screaming, and it is not exactly my home ground. But I acknowledge its qualities. Johnny Cash (the clip provided in the original post is blocked here, so I am listening to the music video instead) is more up my alley. More restrained. Sara DeBell: And now for something completely different. It starts with a metronome and several other pling plong sounds. Then there are som jazzy keyboard instruments. Clearly an original take on the song, and not without humour. I also like the strings, they make a nice contrast. An all instrumental version.

Better late than never... I was away for a film shoot this week in a zone without internet (which is quite good, actually), so I had no time whatsoever to listen to all the suggestions yet, but here are mine.
Sorry for giving you another very well known song, but it is the band that covers it that interests me more here: Shaka Ponk. They are a French electro-punk-hip hop-funk-rock-fusion band and their live performances are generally nothing less than tremendous! And they have done quite some interesting covers. My nomination is from the live music TV show Taratata, which often asks bands to team up with another artist and do a cover, so here Shaka Ponk plays with the Berhollet sisters (two young popular violonists...), but it is Shaka Ponk all over ! PLAY THEM LOUD!

The original: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit:

The Cover: Shaka Ponk - Smells Like Teen Spirit:

And for the pleasure of it, another very well known original and the cover by Shaka Ponk...

Kim Wilde - Kids in America:

and Shaka Ponk's version:

The razamataz is a pain in the bum
