Hey, Genesis is taking the lead, at last!
I think Beatles were incredibly innovative, probably much more than Genesis, more than ANY band, so I won't argue that they were any less than Genesis on that point. Great songwriters too (except for the respective drummers in the band). Certainly much much more than a 'boy band', even in the early stage of their career.
But a lot of proggers, including me, have a bigger love for Genesis. It's a matter of the heart, I suppose.

QFT I like The Beatles but I love Genesis.

As much as I love a man wearing a fox on top of his head while wearing a red dress, this is no comparison to me against the Beatles.

Ah, you're being provocative! Take the flower hat off the head of the cat, put it on your head, and in the naughty corner with you. And you don't come out until you know the lyrics of Cinema Show by heart

Genesis made a lot of great music, but I have always had reservations about them:
1. I can't say I like Gabriel's voice too much (Collins's is not much better). 2. Genesis albums are lengthier than what I consider optimal. Some of them feel outright TL;DL 3. After a number of strong albums, Genesis made a few embarrassingly weak ones.
By way of comparison:
1. The Beatles remains one of the best vocal groups of all time 2. All "mature" (post-1965) Beatles albums are of optimal length and have perfect timing and structure. The 90' 2LP White Album is probably the only double album that I can listen to in one sitting. 3. There isn't a single post-1965 Beatles album that I consider weak, inconsistent, derivative or disappointing in any other way.
Regarding the oft-mentioned "influence": Genesis made a lot of ingenious symphonic rock, which is still being imitated (or emulated) by a number of new(er) bands. At the same time, the Beatles completely overhauled the whole world of popular music. I'd argue that the Beatles's innovation in 1965-1970 helped create or bring to the fore a good dozen styles, including symph, hard rock, psychedelic, electronic and what not.
