I don't care whether something is prog or not. The fact that Hazards is proggier only makes it worse in my opinion. I think they're better at the more ballady stuff like The Crane Wife, We Both Go Down Together, etc...

But this being a prog site, I'm not surprised people generally like it a lot. Smile

Hm... Soft Machine 1 + 2 was actually great stuff this time round... odd given I didn't exactly love them at first. highlights go to A Door Opens And A Door Closes and Why Are We Sleeping?, but the whole thing, particularly the bass (Hugh Hopper, right?), was great stuff.

Meh. I probably still like The Crane Wife more than Hazards. But yeah, I agree that it's no surprise Hazards has gotten a lot of attention here.

And if you like The Crane Wife that much, I guess I can forgive your original comment. Wink

I'd give both....4 stars probably. I think both are growers though.

It was alright for me the first two times, but I wasn't really in the right mood for it, and it didn't really fully hit me. Now that I'm giving it a 3rd spin, it sounds fantastic. Thumbs Up

I honestly have no idea which one I prefer, since I'm just getting into the Decemberists, and I've known Soft Machine for years.

They're both really different too. ConfusedLOL

But this is the Shred Room, where random comparisons are encouraged.  Big smile

Here's one for Pablo:  Lindsay Cooper > Deep Purple.

Ask me again in like 4 months and maybe I'll have a better answer. Wink

Here's one for Pablo:  Lindsay Cooper > Deep Purple.

Agreed entirely. But then again... Lindsay Cooper > almost everything.

Soft Machine is the most disappointing canterbury band.

I didn't like Hazards on first listen and then I liked it a lot more and after seeing it live now I love it.

I'm listening to it for the second time now. I'm hoping for the same thing.

I may be able to see it live; I really hope so.

Hugh Hopper is on Volume 2 but he does play on one track on Volume 1.

I just love Hopper's bass playing on Moon in June.

There's also a wonderful video (actually two, as it's split into two sections on YouTube) of a live version of Moon in June.  Hopper is magnificent on it too.

Check it out.  It's actually from the Bilzen Festival and was recorded in 1969, before the studio version.
