Did he die before 1962?
He say nothing is quite what it seems;
I say nothing is nothing

@VanDerGraafKommandöh: No, not a brewer.
@refugee: No, not before 1962.
Malt and hops were used in obscene amounts.

I think I'll ignore your clues as they're not helping.

@VanDerGraafKommandöh: Yes, American.
@twseel: No, not an entrepreneur.
All the hints will be clear when this person is identified. Only one of them may require a bit of explanation.
His name is mentioned in a Genesis song. Edited by someone_else - October 17 2013 at 06:47

Well not being a Genesis fan doesn't help but I did find the Churchill reference... still none the wiser!

I'm taking a punt... probably chose the wrong guy.
Howard Hughes
No idea how that fits in with the clues, apart from the Churchill one.

Right song, wrong guy

Lenny Bruce then. And yes, I found the Supper's Ready reference first and then continued looking at lyrics until I found the Hughes reference. I did look at Lenny Bruce but couldn't see any correlation with your hints until that last one.
