No, he acts exactly like Columbo if Columbo was an old man visiting his grandson, otherwise I would have just said that Peter Falk is in it, yes.

You know, Stand By Me is one of my favourite films. I've not seen in it in quite some time but I've seen it 2 or 3 times over the years.

I love Columbo in a non-erotic way.

Although now I've thought about it, I have that Lollipop song stuck in my brain. Grrr! But aye. It's well acted and quite dark too. I also like the emptiness and starkness too. It's mostly in the woods and on the railway line. Plus of course, it's a "coming of age" film. Oh and speaking of River Phoenix, my mother really likes "When the River Runs Through It". I'm not sure if I've seen it or not though... is it worth watching?

Yup, I think it was based off a book written by Stephen King, and that would explain the darkness

Indeed it was.
How have I avoided reading Stephen King? I've seen a few film adaptations of his work but I've somehow never read anything by him!

I generally don't like movies that feature children or adolescents.
I do like The 400 Blows and Zero for Conduct though.

On Writing is a good book. I don't think I would like his novels though.

I just don't like children, and I certainly don't want a lot of them in the movies I watch.

The interesting bit of the film is actually the last part when it is revealed what happens to them all.
Everything is the opposite to what you'd expect.

He became a relatively slight Richard Dreyfuss. Who'd have thunk it?
River Phoenix became a Lawyer of course and you know what happened to him.
The chunky chap got married straight out of high-school.
Crap, I've got it all wrong.
Ignore me.
Dreyfuss became the lawyer and wasn't the chunky one. River was the one who got stabbed. Not sure what happened to chunky chap.
