yes, Alien has more of the quick shots and the "wtf was that?" type scenarios...probably better ambience and sound/style than the others.... stylistically and artistically, it blows the rest away.... but overall, I guess I like to see my aliens for more than a few seconds. The pod field under smoke/laser scene in the ship and the huge dead husk of an alien at the gun pointed up to space are probably the best scenes in the film. I wish they would not have cut out the "nest" scene where Ripley finds the bearded guy in a cocoon, asking her: "kill me...." and then she uses the flamethrower on the whole nest... that (I feel) is a key scene that they should have left in the finished movie... it is in the bonus features of the re-release....

actually I'm glad they left that out, what I wished they'd kept were those surreal scenes of the guy in the alien suit, his movements are really weird and scary

I bought a few cheap DVDs. I watched 187 last night. My initial impression was that there was a pretty big divide between Samuel L Jackson and the rest of the cast in terms of acting ability. Besides that, it was an ok film, but nothing more.

500 Days of Summer - what can I say? I loved this movie, everyone in America-whether you wanted to or not-have all seen our fair share of "Romantic Comedies", this one (while can be considered a, RC) was far more subtle and relatable than most RC's I've ever seen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt pretty much carried the movie and I think he did damn fine job, the humor wasn't insulting to my intelligence either, they didn't seem to have the need to fall back on potty humor or stupid 'more-clever-than-thou' crap like you'd see on nowadays sitcoms, this sucker was almost like a guide-book to my current situation, some dumb reviewer was complaining that they tried to make an Annie Hall for the Obama-generation (okay, I inserted my own term there) but really I relate to this far more than Annie Hall, even though I love AH, it just doesn't speak to me the way this one did....for one I'm not a baby boomer, I don't live in NY nor am I jewish, plus the music and pop culture references used in 500 Days I felt much more connected to as well, whatever....I want to take this movie home with me a cuddle with it, 8.5/10

The Wrestler lives up to the hype, very real doc-style film works perfectly with Micky Rourke's style and a great inside look at pro wrestling, very sad though and doesn't follow the typical movie route. Marisa Tomei is excellent.

The Bourne Ultimatum big fan of the first two and this third one is on a par with those, wrapping things up nicely at the end and filled with typically spectacular fight scenes and chases. Great character and film series.

They got any plans for a movie called Bourne Free? I think it would have to end with Bourne getting eaten by lions. Edited by Slartibartfast - August 05 2009 at 07:36 |

Recently watched Children of Men, amazing film.
To top it off, it has a sequence with In The Court Of The Crimson King playing =D and a subtle reference to PF's Animals.

I watched Reality Bites a few days ago not knowing I was in for what is essentially a chick flick. All the main characters in the movie annoyed the heck out of me (except for perhaps Stiller), especially Ethan Hawke's character. I have a hard time getting along with people like that, and I know a few of them.

As a devoted Winona Ryder fan I find this statement profoundly shocking. |

Anyway, I've been watching insect-related movies tonight. First David Cronenberg's The Fly (which was even more impressive than I remembered), now Dario Argento's Phenomena. Gordon Douglas's Them! will probably be next.

She wasn't that bad. I just couldn't get into the movie nor could I relate to the characters eventhough I'm around their age. I know someone with similar career aspirations as her so perhaps I may have been focusing on some of the negative aspects of her character. It could have distorted my view on the movie, but besides that it wasn't for me. No hard feelings. Edited by Stooge - August 05 2009 at 17:20 |

^ To each his own, I guess. I have to admit though that it would be a better movie if it didn't turn into a generic romantic comedy towards the end.

that Fly remake is outrageous, over the top sometimes but a great sci-fi thriller, Them! hasn't really held up but still scary and very good for its time, Tarantula also fun ..actually my favorite insect flick is Mysterious Island with some great bees and crabs from Harryhausen, and I assume you've seen Starship Troopers |
