I agree with Stoney and my namesake. So 1 stands, the other 2 can be deleted. All of the reviews are very poorly written.

The three identical reviews are not reviews of the albums. the duplication only reflects his stand on Rush in general and have no relation to the individual albums as such.

they shouldn't be allowed, if it had been only one review with that content it wouldn't be a problem, but you can't see one of the three as separate from the others.

They seem to be fanboy reviews as well.

Yes but does your favorite band have all masterpiece albums?

and besides:

8 - Before assigning a star rating to an album, you should ensure you understand what the differing numbers of stars mean. Please use "one" and "five star" ratings very sparingly -- most albums you dislike will have at least some positive qualities, and not every album that you enjoy will be a perfect "masterpiece of prog".

So every album by your favorite band is perfect?

Even I wouldn't go that far....

Come on, Ben! An album doesn't have to be perfect to warrant a 5-star review. Our system for rating is a bit flawed, but that stuff is hard to change.

Still interested to hear other views here. I can see both sides, so your opinions are helpful.

No..Ben is right....An album doesn't have to be perfect, but the pros must outweigh the cons considerably.

For example, I would give Brain Salad Surgery 5 stars, despite the presence of non  5 star tracks, because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And the good parts outweigh any shortcomings significantly.

But what Tuxon has said is just plain daft.Confused

Ouch

It's not daft, but I hate it when my opinions are presented as facts.

My opinions are not objective, they are entirely subjective and completely right for they are mine. There's no need to agree with me, but you can't say my opinions are daft just because your subjective opinion isn't in agreement with mine.

I think those Rush reviews should get deleted, EL. They seem to take potshots at a certain demographic of Rush fans and are hardly insightful reviews- how can they be when the same sentence has been written with what amounted to an 'insert album here'  section each time.

It's subjective, of course, but I strongly dislike 'fanboy' reviews as well. My depiction of a 'fanboy' review is one that dolls out the 5 stars to an album without any real justification/explanation for it and most of the time, filled with an abundance of superlatives. No problem with 5 stars being given to an album that has the odd duff track but as has been said, the pros should outweigh the cons, imho.

I think we have to be more parsimonious when deciding whether to keep reviews of albums not released yet...

..who would get an advanced copy?

1) A DJ (not noted as reviewers but their egos wouldnt allow them to submit a poor review surely)
2) Someone/site picked out by the publicity agent or record label as a reviewer.

in the case of 2) let's just consider the psychology....you are chosen to review an album do you
a) write the best possible review, going into detail about everything from production, the tracks, musicians, historical context and potential impact

or b) submit this:

5%20stars I'd say Symphony X have made an interesting choice with this album. It's probably about as commercial as they can get within their field, without losing their integrity. It's much heavier than anything they've ever done before and it seems like much more of a total band effort than Romeo obscuring everything. The production is killer, and Russell puts out his best performance yet. It's more varied than ever before, practically growling to amazing heartfelt lyrics...i.e. Paraidse Lost itself, which i'd say is one of the best tracks Symphony X have ever written. A Must buy for all ProgMetal fans. The high expectations are the only thing that let this near perfect album down...

it doesnt take a Sherlock Holmes.

Ok, I am not saying this should apply to every review, just reviews of albums not released at the time of posting..

^ I can't see the big problem with this review ... of course it's not very professional so it's unlikely that the reviewer belongs to a circle of people which would be chosen by a record company to receive promo copies of new albums.

Just moved your post to this forum, Erik. Let's wait if some discussion will arise.

I was just wandering if in an imaginary PunkArchives someone using the nickname Punkie or Punker could say similar things to "Never Mind The Bollocks" or "London Calling". Dead

Atkingani, imagine my contributions as the new reviewer Punker:

"shine on your crazy diamond is nothing but a poor song with boring use of synthesizers and too mellow use of guitars"

"Close to the edge is the most overrated epic, it's no more than drugs-driven over-ambitious crap with irritating self-indulgence on keyboards and guitar"

"The Musical Box is a typical symphonic prog song that lacks tension and ends with hysterical screams by the over-sensitive singer Peter Gabriel with his childish lyrics"

... you can add more if you like but it's the way Progger is writing about classic prog albums Angry !

Sure it can, but you can't state as a fact that my opinion is daftTongue

My opinion was there to express that other people's opinions can't be critisised if these opinions are genuine.

If someone believes all Rush albums are worth 5 stars, who are we to say he is wrong, it's his opinion and that should be fine with us. The same for people who don't consider KC Court of the crimson King a masterpiece, or consideres Genesis albums to be very weak.

it's all opinion and if you can't deal with people having different opinions, how can you expect honoust ratings. Fans and bashers should get more freedom to express their likes and dislikes openly and uncensored, without constantly being called fanboy's or not worthy of writing on a progressive rock site.

We need both sides of the medaillion to keep a balance between objective analisis and subjective reasons, personally i prefer subjective reasons for liking a band than an objective analysis, for that may reflect on quality, but not on beauty.

The problem with the Rush reviews is that it aren't album reviews, but band reviews, and those should be a part of the album review, but the review has to be specifically adressing the album, which didn't happen. therefor they should be deleted, and the writer should be informed asking for a more album specific review to replace the faulted review. But it's the review that's wrong, not his opinion.
