Finished se01 of The White Lotus the other night - very enjoyable, if a tad weird at times. I'll let that one digest before watching series 2 in Sicily.
Shadow and Bone series 2. I could barely remember series 1 it was that long ago (2 years lol) and it started without a recap so I had to read a synopsis of the first series. Based on the books of the same name it creates an interesting world with some strange characters. It's developed to have 2 story arcs: the main one being a dullish teen adventure, the second an odd gang of reprobates with a mission unknown as yet - but much more thrilling. There are 3 books in the series, so probably another series to come yet. Not too shabby - 7/10 |

The Consultant 8 episodes
This is something of an oddity having been developed as a dark comedy but in truth there is very little comedy to speak of. Christoph Waltz plays a very 'far out' business consultant with some radical ideas. He's extremely perverse in his actions (sexually and everything else) and doesn't appear to have any inhibitions or worries about potential HR issues. It's just plain weird, I struggled to understand the point and at the end of the day Waltz's character is just a sociopath and that's it. I imagine some might like this better than I did. 5/10

Malpractice 2023
From the team that brought us Line Of Duty comes this medical thriller very much in the same vein but set in a hospital. A female doctor is spiraling out of control as she tries to deal with her own drug dependency issues wile servicing a busy A&E dept. Needless to say it has plenty of plot twists and some very brutal stuff re drugs that is not for the feint hearted. Most well known actor present is James Purefoy with quite a small role considering his general stature. However his character becomes key as the plot unravels. Entertaining but don't take it too seriously! 7.5/10

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Finished Beef last night. Started out really well, but stopped being comedic half way through and became a serious drama that ended in a strange sort of way. I really didn't like either of the main characters either - no empathy or sympathy from me (their stupid, selfish actions ruining many others' lives). 6/10

enjoying The Last Thing He Said To Me. Only 4 episodes put up so far but I've gobbled them up.
Something else that had just come on is Citadel. Spy thriller stuff with some very good actors, notably Richard Madden, Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville. Low brow high octane entertainment ideal for Friday night viewing!

Picard Season 3
I've enjoyed the whole series a lot and this is as well written as the first 2. There are no plans for more sadly but does indicate a potential spin off involving Jeri Ryan's '7 of 9'. That would be fun. 8/10 |

Carnival Row Season 2
For my money the best fantasy series since Game Of Thrones. Starring Orland Bloom and model turned actress Cara Delevingne, both are extraordinarily good along with a great supporting cast. A version of Victorian London is well realised as the backdrop and some very horrid creatures are thrown in for good measure. 9/10

The Box of Delights (UK - 1984 - 6 episodes): One of the best kids shows I've ever seen. Especially the last 2 episodes were even better than Time Bandits. Splendiferous job! 10/10

Finished Succession last night. I enjoyed it in the main, but I doubt I could take anymore of the style of the show with stuttering conversations, shaky camera work and it started to go round in circles a bit too much. A satisfactory, if rather brutal ending. 9/10 for the whole 4 series.

I only watched 4 episodes then NOW started missing about with putting on adverts in show that can't be skipped so decided to cancel my subscription. Anyway I feel it peaked in Season 3. No spoilers, but I'm with Brian Cox on the major decision that was taken with the writing direction.

Finished most of Strange New Worlds season 1. I've never been a fan of post-TOS shows but this is excellent. |

the lead actor playing Christopher Pike is superb (Anson Mount) but I just can't abide Christina Chong's cut glass English accent which sounds so forced to me. Frustrating, especially given that she is actually English. Is the director putting her up to it I wonder?! I tried hard to get past this put had to give up in the end. Funny that I subscribed to Paramount to get this show and then end up watching other great shows such as Mayor Of Kingstown and Tulsa King instead

^ Isn't she supposed to be a Noonien-Singh ? Wouldn't that make her character part Sikh ? |

Well whatever it is I'm not getting it and so it becomes just far too distracting sadly. I am annoyed with myself because I like Star Trek generally and even stuck with Discovery long after it had ceased to be interesting.

struggling to finish anything at the moment but must give a nod to The Steel Town Murders (4 episodes). Stars Philip Glenister and he is tremendous in it, investigating an unsolved crime 30 years after a series of notorious murders in the Welsh valleys in the early seventies. Could DNA forensic testing finally provide the missing answers? Compelling stuff. 9/10

Der Greif (The Gryphon) - TV Series - 2023 - Season 1 - 6 Episodes:
Immersive and impressive, if not a wholly standout series. A very nice, brand new German TV series. Kinda like Stranger Things, but not a blatant rip-off. So much rock and metal music related content too! The horned ones rock! (See the very end of the last episode for that.) \m/ The whole thing could be (interpreted as) an allegory on psychosis too, though. The reference to Kurt Cobain at the end somewhat substantiates that. Fantasy and reality becomes elided here outlandishly. One of its creators/writers is a Turk: Erol Yesilkaya. (The surname's original/Turkish spelling is Yeşilkaya.) Also, there's the Turkish "Memo" and his father among the characters. Really an entertaining show. 8/10 Edited by Archisorcerus - June 08 2023 at 04:23 |

Succession Season 4 8/10 We really enjoyed the series, but for some reason the finale felt like a bit of a disappointment to the Mrs and me. Still not sure why exactly. Oh well, on to the next series.

That annoys me a bit too. I watched again an episode of Strange New Worlds yesterday. For me it has not appealed nearly so much as Picard, and it looks like Seven of Nine might be hosting the show, and she is just a powerhouse. Love her more now than in Voyager, as I was actually upset when they removed Kes. I would have rather seen Neelix, who annoyed me (and the relationship with Kes felt uncomfortable, paedophiliac and obsessive), go, or the wooden Ensign Kim. These days I have a big thing for most anything Scandinavian (and German). I did finally finish The Rain some time ago, took me a while to get hooked (not as much as Dark, which I finished not long before that -- such a great series). Before that I finished The Sinner (all seasons). Lots of more limited run series. I di enjoy Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes some time back (might have mentioned it already). I really liked from Germany, Kleo. I loved the last season of Westworld (mentioned already) but still want more and doesn't look like it will happen. |
