Well, our tastes aren't THAT similar anyway. SFAM is more my type of music.
Your musical compatibility with HughesJB4 is
Music you have in common includes Porcupine Tree, Meshuggah, The Mars Volta, Frank Zappa and Opeth. |

Hopefully not, it won't actually be released until the end of the year; they're still taking pre-orders. I'll probably order mine when my credit card flips over in early December - if it gets here in time for Christmas it's a Christmas present, if not no worries. |

Oh, okay. That should be fine then. The whole concept of pre-orders can be kinda stupid at times though. |

Dream Theater is currently at number 51 in my last FM list:P
Proof of how little I listen to them now. And when I do throw on I&W, it's usually when I'm in my bedroom with the CD, so that obviously doesn't count towards Last FM plays. |

Wow. That's almost exactly what happened with me. One day I was listening to SFAM and I realized to myself that I&W was an album that drew me in so much more when I listened to it. I guess it's just a personal taste thing. |

This song sums up why this album strikes more of a chord with me than I&W does. It fits SO perfectly, every song is amazing and emotional, and the album really works as a unit of prog and metal (whereas I feel I&W appeals more to someone who likes metal more than someone who hardly likes any).
In short, it really touches me on a heavily personal level for some reason. Powerful music. "I'M LEARNING ALL ABOUT MY LIFE BY LOOKING THROUGH HER EYES!" |

Yep. I've never understood why Train of Thought gets so much garbage on this site. To me, it's simply DT exploring a different aspect of their music, and quite effectively I might add. I've always thought the "well it's their most Metallica-like album" is a BS excuse, because I definitely hear a fair amount of Metallica influence on Awake too. |

It definitely is a matter of taste, and I can often notice a pattern in someone's listening preferences (generally and some of them anyway) just by which DT album is their favorite. |

I never use that excuse because it is bullsh*t. I just don't like it much. But again, that's the taste aspect. |

Funny thing is, it took me a while to get into ToT, at first I did think it was sort of a garbage shred-fest, but one day I was playing it (I can even remember, I was in the basement of my old house cleaning things up, getting ready to sell the place) and for some reason it clicked and I was totally blown away. "This Dying Soul" is just a total pwn. |

Awake is actually my favorite, then Images and Words. Then Systematic Chaos. And then SFAM.

Anyone that calls Train Of Thought the most Metallica inspired album has
A: not actually heard Metallica before B: knows nothing about Dream Theater C: In fact does not know anything about metal. Images and Words has clear Metallica thrash metal influence. Train Of Thought is quite clearly influenced by more extreme metal bands and groove metal. And the albums which influenced Dream Theater's thrash elements (i.e, Metallica's first four albums) ARE NOT GROOVE METAL ALBUMS FOR CHRISTSAKE PEOPLE. I want to scream everytime I see a Train Of Thought review comparing it to Metallica. It seems those reviewers have never heard of Pantera or similar groove metal bands. And for god sake, Pantera is not exactly an unknown band, they are pretty popular too. |
