Oh God, the teacher's union is just up in arms over here (or as close as you can get to that for living in a communist state like Madison ;) )
The Detroit Public Schools have a specially appointed man, named Robert Bobb trying to fix it, but the teacher's union is fighting him every step of the way. 1. I chuckle every time I hear his name and 2. it is really hard not to blame the teachers for fighting him. There isn't enough money in the world to pay a person to try and teach all of the troubled students in the city of Detroit. It is a real no-win situation, as so many students get passed into the next grade unprepared just to meet quotas, etc...

Well right now our governor Scott Walker is attempting to pass a bill that will make a number of cuts to the Wisconsin teacher's union, with things like pensions and benefits being reduced, but I think the biggest deal with it is that it removes a teacher's privilege to bargain their contract.

Governor Snyder today announced that he wants to tax retirement distributions, which have always been tax-exempt here in Michigan. We are the only state in the union, with an income tax, which exempts retirement distributions. The retirees are none to happy that they voted for him right now.

New Jersey's really screwed up in terms of education. The teacher's union refused a one-year pay freeze, so all teachers refused to write letters of recommendation for college as a protest until the state agreed to take back the pay freeze.
Luckily that was a few weeks before the letters were due.

Nothing like holding the children hostage in order to get to your way.

I remember my brother and I coming home and telling my parents that our teachers refused to write our letters of recommendation. They seriously flipped out.
Teacher salaries in the district are already so high (many teachers make >100k plus benefits) that they should've agreed to the pay freeze rather than threaten kids' futures.
