Allmans pwn Skynyrd.

Late '70s and '80s Allmans wasn't as good.  It's all about Duane Allman and Berry Oakley Jr. era and also their live material.  Live they are fantastic.

I love current AMM too, they have one of the best lineups of any band in the world.

Two drummers (both original members)
A terrific bassist
Warren Haynes = one of the best blues and slide guitarists in the world
Derek Trucks = the best slide guitarist in the world
Plus Gregg Allman on keyboards, of course.

Yeah, I tend to get obsessed over things in the begining, including new music forums. Most likely I won't post as much in a couple of weeks.

I can do the same thing... but look at me now. LOL

Fillmore East is just one of those things that everyone should have.

Speaking of pinkies... seems my fingers are not long enough to play the begining of Genesis's Horizons.

I'm pissed.

Yes they play different music and in different styles but talent wise they're similar.  Cream are maybe less complex but I wouldn't say they are simple.

LOL

Dude, that's hilarious. LOL

Rush are on a completely different playing field. How can you even compare the two bands when they hardly have anything in common except roots?

Easily.

I'm not talking about musically.

I'm talking about the performers.

Peart vs. Baker
Lee vs. Bruce
Lifeson vs. Clapton

They're all equal in terms of skill and complexity.  I bet Lifeson could play a Clapton solo and vice-versa.  I bet Baker could play similar to Peart.

Both are trios.
Both have the bass player as a vocalist.
Both have great guitarists.
Both have weird and unfathomable lyrics.

They are similar and I believe technically they're about the same.  Cream just came earlier.  If Cream had lasted, they could have made more complex, Rush-like music. Big smile

Besides, you like Kansas. LOL

Clapton couldn't touch Lifeson's abilities.
I know this speaking from a guitarists perspective having studied both their styles.
Clapton doesn't even understand modes, but I bet Lifeson can through 'em all, much faster and cleaner too.
Plus Clapton doesn't ever incorporate his pinky into lead playing, he came from that 60s school of blues rock playing where they 'didn't need it', whereas in order to play Lifeson solos, you need to use your pinky and use bigger stretches.
Lifeson is not more technically accomplished subjectively......he is, by fact, a more technically proficient guitarist.

That's what I meant.

They play different music but technically they're both great.  Clapton, as you say, doesn't need to play like Lifeson.

Plus they're from different eras.

I think Cream are like a good precursor to Rush (both are trios and have bass players who sing) and I bet Rush listened to a lot of Cream too. Wink

That's why I'm matching them up.

Derek Trucks if so AWESOME!!!

Didn't even know about him until last May when I went to see Santana. I was completely blown away. Seriously, people can diss Santana all they want, but him and Trucks jamming together on stage was da sh*t!!!!

Indeed.

I need the full version, I still don't have it.

I have the original one.

One of the greatest live albums of all time (for that style of band and music).  Whippin' Post is just epic.

And I've not heard the Zappa version, so I cannot mention that.

Absolutely no doubt about this, Cream and Led Zep were the the two big influences on Geddy and Alex (probably Keith Moon was the major one for Neil).

Santana is a wonderful soloist he just made bad choices recently with his musical direction (in my opinion).

'70s Santana was great.

But yes, Derek Trucks is wonderful.  One of my favourites in fact.  You need to hear current Allman Brothers Band, they'll blow you away.

I have not heard any new Skynyrd, but I've heard people remarking that they're essentially their own cover band... hope this isn't the case with The Allman Brothers, James?

Yep.

But I let her borrow an Ayreon album for a while longer, 'cause she likes them. LOL

Although I doubt she's listened to it.

We're still friends and she's just been (or still is) on Egypt.  It was her birthday on the 10th and I know she was in Egypt for it.

I best find out if she's back yet and go and see her.  We actually get on better now. LOLEmbarrassed
