Again, I'd say it is my extreme bias against hard rock.

I'm too tired to talk about politics right now, so I'll just assume that James doesn't know what he's talking about. Sure I don't know enough about British politics, but that's not the point. Tongue

Also, if Rush doesn't deserve to be on this site, then I vote that they at least make VDGG go away too. Wink I'll ignore any more sarcastic smartassery from James for now.

Actually, I know perfectly well what I'm talking about.  Please don't assume I don't. Angry

I don't mean the Rush comment, that was indeed just tongue-in-cheek. LOL

A week is, supposedly, a long time in politics. It's somewhat unfortunate that folk seem to be incapable of thinking of some real change from the two-party system... I don't know, maybe Labour are going out for the count, but I think what we need is a system where the alternative to a less-than-optimal Labour party isn't just a less-than-optimal conservative party. And it annoys me that so many non-main party votes are going to the Greens, who really have just one political principle and don't want to represent their constituents, and I can't find a lot of people who seem to have any idea what the alternative parties are standing for, even if they seem to loathe all the main parties... they just don't care enough to do research and seem to hide behind 'well, I can't change anything' if asked about it. How the hell anyone can say it's impossible to vote is beyond me... Can democracy thrive in the face of the typically British chronic sloth, I wonder?

On the plus side, Gladys Kinnock as MP for Europe was an interesting surprise, Jacqui Smith is gone (and about time), and the conservative majority seems to not be shooting out of control and the minor party votes are going up at the expense of Labour, which isn't a bad thing.

I wouldn't mind so much if the folks I'd spoken to about it didn't seem so damn wilfully ignorant/naive... yes, Labour messed things up, yes, expenses. On the other hand, calling Labour 'champagne socialists' doesn't change the fact that theoretically the Tories are champagne champagnists, and when it seems impossible that the Tories wouldn't have made the same mistakes and suffered the same misfortunes, I really have to wonder.

/rant which non-Brits probably won't understand.

It's Glenys Kinnock, not Gladys. LOLWink

Dammit.

I'll keep my thoughts brief on this, as I am really rather angry about most of it.

My main anger is how long-time staunch Labour supporters can suddenly about-turn and vote Conservative.  It makes no sense whatsoever.  It really saddens me.  Do they not remember the Thatcher government?  The Tories haven't changed at all.  They may not be quite as bad but they're still bad.

The Tories have changed dramatically. They're now very slightly right-leaning centrists, and I think I can only say slightly right-leaning because they're against 'big government' and don't want to interfere with the economic crisis',

I'm not saying Labour (or New Labour) are doing things right either but they're a lot better than the Tories ever will be.

Both as bad as each other, really. I dislike the Tories because they're aiming to get in based on discontentment with Labour, and I've yet to see anything concrete and convincing from them. Coincidentally, a couple of weeks before the conservative party conference (which completely changed their fortunes), I managed to get a Tory MP to criticise David Cameron. Just saying, if it weren't for the media backlash on that, the Tories could well be in the same position as Labour are now.

How are people so naive? ErmmOuch

Think they try.

Also, why do people constantly vote against the government in Council elections when things aren't going well?  You're supposed to be voting to elect the best councillors, whether they be Tory, Labour, Lib Dem, Other or Independent.  Just because the Labour Government are not in favour at the moment, it doesn't mean you should vote out (a) perfectly good Councillor(s).  It's not the fault of the Councillor, is it?  They work hard for your constituency and may be doing a great job.  Then you vote them out and vote someone else in.  Let's hope for your sake, the replacement is as good, if not better.  If not, then I won't be telling you "I told you so".

An area right next to mine now has two BNP councillors (I think they weren't standing in mine). Hilarious. Well, I suppose the argument is that it's a sign to the government, encourages voting for the opposition party when a real election comes up because people aren't thinking it's a wasted vote etc. Yes, it's a lousy idea when you should be voting based on MP competence, but, y'know, if someone basing their vote on anger with expenses in my area manages to vote for the Tories rather than this guy., that's just unwillingness to care.

The Party Political Broadcasts also annoy me.  They either bash the opposition, or go on about policies that do not relate to what people are actually voting for.

What policies?? WinkLOL

What does the Expenses issue have to do with hard working councillors?  You're voting for local issues, not because of national government issues.

Nothing whatsoever. Pretty much.

The same with the EU elections.  You're voting for EU issues, not home ones.  Don't vote against something just because of some Expenses row or because of the incompetency of the Leader or whatever.  Vote for the European Issues that fit your view.  Sure, those views may well be against the government and that's fine but please don't vote 'purely because you're dissatisfied with the government in power.

With the EU elections, it's slightly different because the MEPs seem to have expenses issues themselves, and also, because they're selected by their parties (basically where they're positioned on a list), not by constituents, if you don't broadly agree with the way their party is functioning, European issues will often turn out to be governed by their British issues, anyway.

I think I'm done.

Yeah, I heard about that and saw the trailer for it. I think it might have revitalized my interest and hopes in Nintendo. Well, that and what I've heard about SMG 2 being more hardcore gamer-oriented. Big smile
