My philosophy teacher was an atheist, but  he would defend religious ppl and generally tear fundamentalists and militant atheists a new one, if they started harping on each other.

Another cool thing he did was at the beginning of the course, he separated us into 4 groups:

A) You believe in a higher power and believe that it's nature and will can be discovered through religious texts.
B) You believe in a higher power, but aren't sure of it's nature or you think it cannot be fully revealed through religious texts.
C) You think it's possible there is a higher power, but you aren't sure.
D) You firmly believe there is no higher power.

Then he gave us assignments to basically defend our positions agaisnt arguments made against them. I am curious now, so I am goign to make a poll.
