You can't deny you're potentially denying people work though by not buying from stores.  Plus the people who pack the CDs (at the plant and at distribution centres).

With more and more people turning to digital media, it means lots of people who work in such places will have to find work in a job climate that is pretty crap right now.

Just sayin'.

The same for books as well.  That's why libraries and bookshops are shutting down.

Oh yes!

> They can starve for all I care. As soon as James Hetfield starts buying my toddler some food and clothes I'll start considering paying company wages.

Edited for your pleasure.

Indeed James but sadly...is what it is.
It be cold hearted man.

Also the idealist in me wants to say true musicians would rather their music be heard above all. Fans will support them. Maybe record stores will die but progress usually isn't pretty. I love my CD's but digital media is the future.

James Hetfield works in HMV/Walmart/Best Buy/Tower Records/ReR/Wayside/ZNR/*insert store here* then?

So you also don't buy your music either?

I know it's tough out there.  I haven't bought many CDs recently either because I'm saving money. Ouch

Ahem. I'm a stingy, greedy, self-centered, economically apathetic f**khead when it comes to people I don't know. With all the money you spend on music, you could be feeding starving people in another country. We could all be giving to charity and volunteering in our districts. Sara Merrington from South Dakota, mother of three can starve for all I care.

Cry

Not if I can help it.  One day there will be a major digital crash and everyone will lose everything.  I shall be fine with my CDs and Books. Big smile

I've volunteered for work and I plan to do more.  I've also know people who work in music stores and book shops.  So in my case it's more personal.

Plus I give money to the British Red Cross monthly too. Big smile

Did you just contradict yourself?  You did.  So you wouldn't give money to Sara Merrington but you'd give money to Charity for starving people you don't know or give a toss about?

I probably misunderstood you.

You can assume what you want - I know what I'm not allowed to talk about. But let's just pretend I had a kitten fetish and had to have them. Say each kitten was special and unique and different. If there was a way to get a nearly infinite supply of free kittens of any kind, I'd do that, even if it meant damaging the economy, starving people, putting people out of work, or whatever. I'd love the kittens so much that I'd never allow myself to be deprived, and putting a financial limit on what kittens I obtain would make me want to die. Why deprive myself of happiness and ease of access and work and toil at a menial labor occupation when I can get all the free kittens I want without any personal repercussions?

My CD collection grows by the week! Often not even new, but buying what I already have. Now that is being a fan!
It just like globalization though bro, it sucks and we're all doomed and we can't stop it! Cry

Obtaining Kittens isn't quite the same as musicians making music to sell and hopefully make a living from... that's a poor analogy.  I do understand what you mean though.

What sort of digital crash would destroy all hard drives and personal computers, but not cd players?

One that destroys files from your hard drive?

The CD player could still work.

Of course, it could fry your PC but I'd hope you'd have a backup CD player if you don't use your PC one like I do.

I understand the differences. I assumed you did, as well. You do, and I see that. I'm not going to make my life harder or deprive myself when I don't have to. I don't care about other people in general. I'm going to be dead long before any positive effect occurs from my self sacrifices, so I won't even be able to enjoy the fruits of my labors. If that's the case, why labor?

What if I just burn all my albums to cds? It'd be cheap and easy and I could do it if I had to.

And in the case of your vinyls/CD's, those are going to eventually deteriorate into a state of disuse. If every song I had on my harddrive right now was deleted (I have approximately 100,000), I could have it all back in a couple weeks. In fact, through my own clumsiness, I've lost all my musical data more than once.

I try to buy only digital.
This goes for books as well, since I got my Kindle.

I never plan to purchase a Kindle.  No thanks.

And yes, there's nothing stopping you copying them to CD-R.

Much of my music is OOP and some of it I've got from blogs and the links are broken now so I'd find it difficult to get them again.

Some of my CDs I also rip onto my HDD.  If I had a big enough drive I'd try and do all of them.

I have more Digital than Physical albums but I'd much prefer it to be the other way around.

I want a kindle to play with, but I'm already committed to having my own personal library. Besides, It'd hurt my eyes trying to read it and I'd have to deal with keeping it powered.

A couple 2 TB harddrives should do it. I don't know the exchange rate, but I can afford to get a new one of these every few months, and I'm dirt poor.
