Christine 23 Onna ... Maso YAMAZAKI and Fusao TODA

Exactly another addictive agent, this mysterious music "Sexaholia" is.

CHRISTINE 23 ONNA were founded as one of Maso YAMAZAKI's projects (like Masonna, Space Machine, or South Saturn Delta), by Maso and Fusao TODA (ex-Angel'in Heavy Syrup) in 1998. This critical electronic duo have given a music strategy for "a fusion of the psychedelic phrases of accomplished guitarist and composer Fusao, and the spacey electronics of Maso (quoted from their website)", quite different from the other projects of Maso mentioned above.


Acid Eater (2002) - CHRISTINE 23 ONNA

Gradually invaded into my deep brain and instantly broken the tissue structure in pieces ... I'd not been fond of this album indeed, but amazingly it was only a fake. Got immersed in such a loud, annoying atmosphere through the acid sound-garden created by two rox / sex experts.



Consider that their soundscape can be divided into three fragments basically. One is a comfortable "pop" world soiled / violated with a bunch of irritating noise dirts (like the very beginning stuff "Fantasisco" or "The Last Hunter" or so, heavy, deep, and danceable groove numbers along with their catchy sense), one is an electronic ambiance like "Unknown Planet", with meditative, hallucinogenic medication spice (actually this frag is my favourite, where I can get drenched fully in their transcendental meditation with the basic human activity), and one is an acid noisy dirty violation itself (e. g. "Acid Now!", the titled one or the last "Erotopia - The Climax"). Yeah dazzling capricious states of sound can be attractive for us too, let me say.



We can feel sometimes go-ahead-ly enthusiastic, sometimes mysteriously inspirational, and sometimes toughly nauseous.  And finally we will get absorbed deeply into their mischievous electronic sound structure with heavy, loud guitar noises and deep, percussive rhythm quakes. Honestly I cannot help recommending this funkadelic electronic explosive album for every freak elektronika. Woohoo.

Thanks for the recommendation. So far, South Saturn Delta is one of the better sounding noise bands I've heard -- much better than Hijokaidan.

And Alan, try also HANATARASH (a crazy noise project founded by Yamatsuka EYE, who formed BOREDOMS later) ... hard to get their albums currently though.

Toshiaki YOKOTA (the frontman of GENSHI-KYODOTAI)

In 1944, Toshiaki YOKOTA was born in Tokyo. He'd played flute since his childhood while he appeared on stage as a professional flutist when he was 17. Through his own outfit Toshiaki Yokota & The Beat Generation or Kohsuke ICHIHARA's project Love Live Life (+1), he founded another twelve-piece ensemble named GENSHI-KYODOTAI (Primitive Community) in 1971 with Shunzo OHNO (trumpet), Kimio MIZUTANI (guitar), Kimio KOIZUMI (bass), Yusuke HOGUCHI (Hammond organ), Larry SUNAGA (percussion), Pedro UMEMURA (percussion), Tadaomi ANAI (percussion), Yoshinori NOHMI (percussion), Fujio SAITO (percussion), Minoru ISHIYAMA (percussion), and Chito KAWACHI (drums). "Primitive Community" (1971) was their only one album released via a Japanese major label Toshiba Ongaku Kogyo (at present EMI Music Japan). Toshiaki has played also in Takeshi Inomata & Sound L.T.D., and currently plays as a solo jazz flutist on stage all over the world, upon mass media, or so.


Primitive Community (1971) - GENSHI-KYODOTAI (PRIMITIVE COMMUNITY)

Just like "Amalgamation" by Soundbreakers, GENSHI-KYODOTAI (PRIMITIVE COMMUNITY) have given the first loud / eccentric shout upon their eponymous album. As for me, cannot forget the moment I met and listen to this album for the first time. Not simply avant-garde jazz nor ethnic music, but definitely experimental psychedelia blended with avant-garde jazz and tribal percussion, they can be considered. And yes, let me say that they had completed such an unbelievable Neues for early 70s music scene, not only in Japan but also all over the world.



Exactly we can hear kaleidoscopic caricatures fusile with madness and sacredness, especially in the masterpiece / first explosion "Kinjirareta Gishiki (A Forbidden Ritual)" where they shoot kinda muddy inferno and solemn pentangle at the same time, with funky shouts, hypnotic percussion with ethnicity, and crazy flute attacks ... all should be in the Community and build this Primitive up, easily I guess.



In the second tune "Akuma No Namida (Tears Of Satan)" Toshiaki’s sharp-edged flute guillotines (might mean "Satan") drop swiftly down and holy percussion gems (like "Tears") glimmer fuzzily ... obviously there is symmetry among the representatives in this track (and the title of this song). "Hari Krishna" reminds me some traditional Japanese psychedelic progressive pioneers like Hiro Yanagida or Kuni Kawachi (both were pretty familiar with Toshiaki actually). On the contrary, "Black Narcissus" is very stable for us ... sounds comfortable, safe and sound for us, with smooth flute waves upon soft, cool percussion ground

Anyway, always wondering if "Savanna" might, like the first masterpiece "A Forbidden Ceremony" already mentioned, get quite influenced by Orient-based garagey Krautrock combos like Siloah, Blumen Des Exotischen Eises, or Anima ... Nah GENSHI-KYODOTAI had released this album in 1971, just the same time as the outfits above had done. This mysterious flavour should perfectly be their originality, identity (or one of joint projects with Masahiko Sato / Soundbreakers). Very amazing and incredible indeed.

Let me notify every progressive rock freak all over the world that a terrific Japanese ensemble released such a terrific creation in 1971. Ultra-highly recommended.

Koenjihyakkei is a japanese prog band someone showed me awhile ago and I guess they sing in a made up language called zeuhl. I don't know how much more sense the lyrics would make if translated but it's still an interesting idea, and really crazy music

4 stars Shouts in our mind that we do hope to get stability or something even in an unstable condition ... cannot avoid feeling such a phenomenon by four talented artists via this album "Leap Second Neutral".

Complex and powerful drumming by Toshiaki, deep and heavy bass moonquake by Hiroyuki, and sharp-edged keyboard kicking by Noriya, might tell their "strict inconstancy" terrifically filled with sensation of speed. As if we would stand upon a fragile plate ice, we should always have gotten scared of their uptempo instability, but it's not true actually. Listen to the first track "M-B" and you can feel that these four superb "sound magicians" could get quite stabilized and harmonized like a clear, square crystal upon such a complex poly-rhythm structure. Their powerful loudness cannot be forgotten always, while delightful, funky, fancy grooves in "Neutral" go through our brain massively.

On the other hand, here is another fluctuation like "Stum" (as the title ... immature wine ... says) with risky state of sounds downstream eternally. The sound structure of "Solid Box" should be solid indeed but Mahi-mahi's flexible saxophone can make this track more fluid and more liquid than we expected. Even into short tracks like "Monaco" their intensive complexity and eccentricity should be squeezed fully. We can enjoy their sounds of dizzying speed and various appearances in their principal theme "strict inconstancy", like long-matured whisky or wine. Splendid theatre.
