Speaking of which, I'm also in contact with Scott Braziel.

So that makes means I'm in contact with three avant-prog musicians:

Geoff Leigh - Henry Cow
Scott Brazieal - Cartoon/PFS
Luciano Margorano - La 1919

And I'm friends on Facebook with:

Elaine di Falco - Caveman Shoescore/Hughscore
Dave Kerman

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I never let people keep me from exploring something I'd otherwise be missing out on. The music is to be judged for the music, despite if anyone else listens to them or not and what their opinions are.

Oh I don't know... my mate Mark is a pretty convincing reason not to like Porcupine Tree. LOLEmbarrassed

I don't have that one, alas.  I have a different Paddy Roberts album.  It's listed on my RYM account.

Is anyone here particularly knowledgeable of Coltrane's vast discography?

I would have more in my collection, but I'm not sure what all to acquire. I'm looking for more songs/albums that highlight his saxophone playing as brilliantly as Giant Steps.

I did before Christmas and he said in the new year.

The thing is... I was going to congratulate him for his awesome playing on Stockholm & Goteborg and then realised he wasn't on it... LOL

Luckily I didn't say that. Embarrassed

It wouldn't have mattered; they're too RIO for you to ever have NOT listened to them and enjoyed it. Wink

Yes, but after hearing a lot of "Kayo Dot is the most innovative group of motherf**kers and is far superior in every way to that bloody awful Canadian group Rush and their ilk" and then buying the album with high expectations only to hear an hour+ of minimalistic, elitist Tony Driver w**kery makes me think that somehow, the avant-kids and I don't have nearly the same tastes. I try not to bash their bands (although I inevitably do since whenever someone says "Kayo Dot" I go on the same kind of killing spree as though someone had said "children" to a pedophile in the movie "Children Of Men"), but they seem to have no trouble getting off to calling melodic and even slightly "mainstream" bands a bunch of trash while defending their 'obscure' drabble to the very end simply because "it isn't understood".

Understandable, but I think you have to be careful about taking "sides" in a field of play like that, especially because it's really easy to do.

I felt the same way 3 years ago, but with time and increasingly open musical frontiers, I have learned to love avant and obscure bands just as much as the more popular ones that became my first musical loves. I think letting people's attitudes or a bad experience getting in the way with enjoying the music and keeping an open mind is what leads to something that many prog fans don't like in the first place: stereotyping and not really judging the music for what it is, and most importantly, not giving it the full mental activity or analyzation that would be given to a different, more popular album.

I can see both sides of the argument here, but the best solution is to sit back and observe it, rather than participating and losing out on the benefits to someone who has access to both points of view uncovers.

Even if you never like many avant bands that much, the outsider's perspective is one that many of us are already familiar with to a general extent (which is why we're here), yet people tend to fall back into ways of categorization in order to pigeonhole bands, sub-genres, or musicians without really getting to judge them properly.

Nonetheless, I understand your frustration at that argument, and I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Kayo Dot at all. I have yet to hear them still, but it should just be a matter of time.

I wouldn't make a big deal about Kayo Dot if the avant-crowd (the elitist ones, anyways) would just SHUT THEIR f**kING TRAPS about the bands that normal people like. Oh no, they're not dissonant and weird - who gives a damn!? People listen to that because they enjoy it - not to inflict pain on the subgenres which are more obscure.

*mumble grumble grumble*

I can only laugh at James jokingly saying "Rush is terrible" so many times before I have to resist the urge to buy a plane ticket and stab his eyes out with a Screwdriver. There's a reason why Scott barely visits his own thread anymore.

People are allowed to have their opinions; I never let it get to me. Besides, you're not the one missing out if they're closed-minded, right?

Yes, but my annoyance is with their "Oh, Gods of Post and Avant save us! Thy heathens of mainstream music are attacking our ways!" whenever someone questions them. Yet their allowed to bash other bands and laugh about it heartily.

Makes no sense - it's like a bully 12-year old who picks on everyone else and then cries when he scrapes his knee.
