Don't have any Morse and stopped buying Spocks Beard when he left.
What's  his best album that has that Spocks Beard magic or are they all different from the Beard...?
Hey Doc, don't give up on the Beard - 'Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep' is a stunner - provided you like Ted Leonard's singing.

Basically my three favorites (though I'd rank Testimony 2 just a bit above Momentum).  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

For any low spots in Testimony 2....those are easily made up with Seeds of Gold, a brilliant pc of music.

The New Spock's Album was awesome, I was blown away by it. I'm happy for them.
I'm going to show some love for Lifeline, sure it might be his weakest but the title track and So Many Roads are stellar. The Humdrum Life section in So Many Roads is pure gold, one my favorite sections in a Morse Epic!

Man, I love this guy's music. I've recently bought One, ? , Sola Scriptura, and Testimony 2. Absolutely epic prog mixed with some more pop parts, and Neal is a master at both. Great musicianship as well. Clap

I guess the next step is to look more closely into Spock's Beard and Transatlantic.

well, you're in for a treat.  the first 3 spock's albums are great as is the fifth.  also, the first two transatlantic albums are great.  their last one is not as good, imo.  really looking forward to the new one.

H'm I have just looked at my Morse section - I have ? and The testimony special edition - neither I have spun, coz I looked at the lyric sheets for mentions of Jesus first ? I noticed ? Had direct quotes from Leviticus and Revelations - so I just didn't bother listening to that. Testimony had a song "Sleeping Jesus" so I didn't spin that either!
If he did music without the lyrics I would probably think they were sublime...

Yeah, I'm previously familiar with SB's V and the first Transatlantic album, but have never gotten deeper into their catalogues. Quite looking forward to it. Cool

Regarding M27Barney's posts above.. I'm an atheist, and I'm not in the least bothered by Neal's lyrics. He's fully entitled to his beliefs and fully entitled to sing about them. If it bothers you that much, just focus on the amazing music.

I really can't understand why you would buy a CD and never play it? How rich are you.......?

Wouldn't it be a better option to listen on Spotify or Youtube before buying?

Anyway, I think you should at least give ? a spin - it's musically excellent even if the lyrics aren't to your liking.

I second this.  Actually, I find the lyrics on ? to be some of Neal's more interesting lyrics (solo wise, at least).

? is all about the temple system and it's ultimate fulfillment...it does have some bible quotes but honestly the story is told in such a fashion that many would not even notice what it is about.

The Sweet Elation/In the Fire/Solid as the Sun "suite" is stunning. Not to be missed by prog fans IMO.

Testimony is another story...much more intimate with obvious themes....Sleeping Jesus is actually a really cool song with a Ramble On type drum rhythm running through it. But even I get a little bored with Disc 2 and songs like Oh To Feel Him.

It seems to me that many recent reviews of Morse albums have all been bashing his beliefs. I find it interesting. No one ever bashes lyrics of other bands with religious bents. I love the band Cynic for example, but hardly ever think about bringing up their Mystical Eastern lyrics. They just play some beautiful technical atmospheric and ethereal music. Yet, people must always criticize his lyrics.

Very true Alex. No one writes off Close To The Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans because they're based on Eastern mysticism. So why write off Neal Morse's music?

And to those points...what albums/artists would be banned quicker by the general public?

Neal Morse or Canibal Corpse?

We (general public) seem to be ok talking about violent death, mutilation, devil worshiping...but eyebrows and ears go up when we discuss religion......especially in music.
