two dutchies writing in English, and misunderstanding each other...
Lobster Newberg is very Pink Floydish at first, but they also have a great track called African Bridesmaid that you should try. Haven't checked whether it is on MySpace though. Edited by Angelo - December 09 2007 at 11:30 |

Lobster Newberg show very well their influences and likes - Pink FLoys, VdGG, Allman Bros and others. This is a well played album and indeed retro-prog, in the sense that it lies on the tradition of "old" lore of prog... I like a lot though (being an eclectic music listener, I like it all, from the most melodic and catchiest to the most harsh, heavy and avantgarde). I think those young members of the band will develop to have their own sound and deliver us more compelling music which has more of their own sound influenced by their heroes, rather than the current status which is more of a "hommage" in which the music is sounding like their heores' music.
Anyway, I enjoy listening to it and in the end of the day, that is what counts for me.

I like the album more and more Assaf - in a few months I expect they will be included in Erik's list of bands that deserve more attention. Just teasing....
BTW: Erik, I have Nemo, Neverness and Mar de Robles on order from Hans - wha'ts your opinion on that last one? |

Assaf: thanks for the info about Lobster Newberg, looks interesting
Angelo, my opinion about all the benads you mentioned:
- Nemo is one of my favorite French bands, I like their eclectic approach, they are good musicians and their sound is very dynamic and often exciting .
- Neverness is a very promising Spanish band with an original sound with emotion and lots of interesting musical ideas.
- Mar De Robles is not really my cup of tea but they make good music, very good guitar work, my review about their first effort:
MAR DE ROBLES — Mar de RoblesReview by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom)SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Symphonic Prog Expert While writing this review I discovered that this five piece Chilean band doesn't use a keyboardplayer. Quite embarrasing for this 'vintage keyboard freak' to discover (I played this CD two times) but on the other hand this is a very good point for Mar De Robles. This is their debut CD, well, from now on I'm eagerly looking forward to their next one, what a great music! The level of the musicians is very high and the compositions are pleasant, varied and elobarated. In general Mar De Robles sounds swinging, due to the outstanding rhythm-section: a powerful, often 'buzzing' bass and energetic, propulsive drums. The range of the instruments is wide, from flute and saxophone to guitars and percussion like djembe and conga's. The Spanish vocals are inspired and loaded with emotion but half of the songs is mainly instrumental. My man on this CD is the guitarplayer with his fiery and often wah-wah drenched guitar soli and strong riffs. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT DEBUT CD!
P.s. Angelo, check out Cesar his reviews and biography!

Blackmail Angelo ..............OK, done
I have received a lot of positive reactions about R-U Kaiser, also from progheads who have seen the YouTube footage. I am glad that this new Latin-American symphonic prog band is appreciated Keep in mind: their debut CD is a limited edition of 600 copies! Edited by erik neuteboom - December 09 2007 at 14:16 |

Neverness is on Prog Archives :
NEVERNESS — Cuentos de Otros Mundos Posibles Review by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom) Special Collaborator Symphonic Prog Expert — First review of this album —This Spanish formation was founded in the late Nineties and in 2002 they released their debut album entitled Horizonte De Sucesos. The it took five years until Neverness produced a successor but if you listen to it, you can conclude that the time was worth waiting, the band has made a huge progress, what a wonderful and often exciting CD! The sound of Neverness has no obvious references, every track (between 5 and 13 minutes) on the album contains lots of flowing shifting moods with many interesting musical ideas and a dynamic rhythm-section. A very captivating element is the contrast between the rock-oriented guitar work and the varied ‘vintage keyboard’ sound, from Mellotron and Moog synthesizer to Fender Rhodes piano, Farfisa organ and Solina string-ensemble. I was carried away during the strongly build-up and often very compelling guitar soli like in Muro De Cristal - Maldita Esperanza (from sensitive to fiery) and Sin Horizonte (long and bluesy with great support on strings and organ). Other great moments are the pyschedelic sounding intro during Desde El Silencio (the guitar and organ sound evoke Pink Floyd At Pompeii), the variety and wonderful vintage keyboards (Mellotron, organ and piano) in Mi Mundo Al Reves and the many goodmusical ideas in the captivating final song Mundo De Locos (4 parts). I am impressed by this second effort by this new Spanish band, what a good musicians and what a wonderful and often compelling compositions, a big hand for Neverness! www.progwalhalla.com
Posted Monday, December 10, 2007, 15:19 EST NEVERNESS — Horizonte de Sucesos Review by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom) Special Collaborator Symphonic Prog Expert — First review of this album —This is a Spanish four piece band that was founded in the late Nineties, this debut CD was released in 2002. Neverness their sound is powerful and dynamic melodic rock delivering fiery and propulsive guitar work by the two guitarplayers (including the singer). But the frequent, very flowing shifting moods and the varied vitnage keyboard sound give Neverness their music on this CD a strong progressive touch. A few examples: a hypnotizing rhythm with Fender Rhodes piano and fiery guitar in Hasta El Final, strong Spanish vocals (expressive and slightly theatrical), wonderful Mellotron and a biting wah-wah guitar solo in Finjo Y Miento, a break with blistereing wah-wah guitar and fluent drums in the titletrack and warm, a bit melancholical vocals in the psychedelic inspired (mainly because of the organ sound) in Todo Acabará. But the two highlights are the ‘epic’ compositions (both almost 20 minutes) that start and close this album. First 10 años Y Un Dia : the first part shifts between fiery wah-wah and mellow Hammond organ waves (like Procol Harum), then an accellaration with a synthesizer solo and tight drums, culminating in a dreamy part with twanging guitars and warm vocals. The song continues with a powerful rhythm including a compelling, very strongly build-up guitar solo with howling runs, supported by lush Hammond organ. Gradually the atmosphere becomes more propulsive featuring swirling Hammond organ, powerful guitar riffs and a fiery guitar solo with piano. Then lots of changing climates with great work on guitar and keyboards and in the end sparkling piano, emotional vocals and captivating interplay between guitar, organ and rums, what a splendid composition! The final track is Malahierva : a mid- tempo with fluent synthesizer runs between parts with twanging guitars, then a long, quite experimental interlude (that sounds different from the rest of the CD) featuring varied work on the piano and electric guitar, accompanied by acoustic rhythm guitar. Neverness returns to their dynamic and powerful sound with a mid-tempo that delivers a strong duel between synthesizer and wah- wah guitar. The atmosphere changes into heavy with a biting wah-wah guitar solo but suddenly a dreamy part with Grand piano, slowly changing into a grand finale with swinging piano and a fiery guitar solo, meanwhile I have turned into a Neverness aficionado! I just got a PM back from Cesar, he owns R-U Kaiser their debut CD so let's hope this wil lead to an inclusion of this very promising new Chilean progrock band

Dutch Tony, everything allright with me, I have survived my nightshift (3 nights ) and I am looking forward to the Riverside concert in De Boerderij this Thursday At this moment I am writing about The Tubes for my 'Interesting Non PA Bands thread'. I have seen The Tubes in 1979 and I am still excited when I think about that mindblowing concert (support act were The Nits featuring RJ Stips, ex-Supersister).

Well Prog-jester, to me Riverside doesn't sound as Prog Metal but indeed, some heavy material to close my eyes and bang my head

Indeed, Riverside their sound is a blend of several styles, more than just Prog Metal. My problem with the category Prog Metal is that I know lots of progheads who don't like Prog Metal but they love Riverside so if you don't like Prog Metal and you avoid everything in the categroy Prog Metal, you miss Riverside
I expect a full house on Thursday, it's incredible how popular Riverside has become! Edited by erik neuteboom - December 11 2007 at 05:45 |

I agree Erik, Riverside go into Metal riffs from time to time but for me it is not frequent enough to trully be a Prog Metal band. Heavy Prog might be a better description.

Erik - when at Riverside, check out their support Dial. They're being considered for inclusion, but the discussion is heavy prog vs. prog metal. Opinions welcome.
(singer Liselotte worked for Aardschok, alongside Martien Koolen - any chance you know her?) If it's not sold out and time allows, I'll be seeing Riverside and Dial on Friday at Plato, Helmond. Small venue, great line up.... |
