OK, I think there are enough hints for a positive identification: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius.
 
My Italian is equally bad and even being married to a half-Italian wife would be of little help here since she has been brought up in Dutch. But I know just enough to recognize some words indicating that these lines from Dante's La Divina Commedia correspond quite well with the English translation in the Wiki entry. Here is a more appropriate translation of Paradiso: Canto X.

Thanks for the link; I’ll dig into it when I have the time. The Swedish translation I have isn’t half bad either, and Boëthius is of course mentioned in the notes.
