Re Nick Rhodes - I actually used to like the keyboard
sounds in some of the Duran songs (eg. The Reflex,
New Moon on Monday). Must be going soft in my old
age.

This keyboarder, because the "bass" you hear in these track excerpts is being played at the same time as the keyboards, but with the foot pedals of the organ; so this keyboarder has a double job. And is an excellent bass player!

You have to read the whole post; I posted too early.

Tribute To Charlie
Undecided

forgot to add these two gems. and no, there really is no bass on these tracks!

I would agree with others that the keyboards are nothing special; well-played, but there are certainly a lot of good keyboarders like that. but what makes these keyboards special is that the keyboarder plays all the extraordinary basslines at the same time as the manuals of the organ, by using the foot pedals. and this foot-pedal technique is unique in the world

Wakeman and Emerson are considered the worlds best 2 rock keyboardists, even in an obscure rock encyclopedia published here... (they probably plagiarized the whole book from some other source!)
I agree with this view, and add Jon Lord as my personal third. Even if you don't consider DP's works prog, you should think twice upon Lord's solo stuff. (one prominent example: Bouree from Sarabande)

my all time favorite is absolutely Master Wakeman

(good joke, mategra! Ketih Tippet is also among my favorites!)

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

^^ I forgot about Dave Stewart.  He is definitely one of my favorites too.  Have to add him to my previous list.
