Those are all excellent albums.....if I had to choose it would be Ocean but Silent Cries is a close second for me.

It's hard to beat the consistency of Eloy, but, yes, Ocean and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes are two fine albums. I'm starting to get into Colours right now and their early 80s period in general. Love the ethereal walls of keyboards on Planets.

Can anybody explain to me what is so good about Ocean? It's the only Eloy album I've listened to yet, but it did not give me a good first impression. All I hear is the vocalist shouting lyrics about Atlantis over generic keyboard solos. There are almost no guitars, minimal dynamics and, for the most part, the songs just blur together. Are Eloy's other albums any different?

What shouting? You must be listening to another album. No guitars? What do you call all of Bornemann's guitar work in the four songs? What do you call the solo in Poseidon's Creation? The songs blur together? When? Sounds like you're just not quite attuned to their music just yet.
I wonder if anyone else has complained that there's hardly any guitar work in Emerson, Lake & Palmer?

Let me try to explain what I hear. It's not shouting as in a harsh yelling, but the vocalist doesn't sound like he's singing; it sounds like he spoke the words forcefully and then the studio work just gave the vocals reverb, delay and chorus. I didn't say there wasn't guitar work, but it's minimal and not memorable. Bornemann is a fine guitarist, but the solos are generic and nothing I wouldn't expect from a generic psychedelic prog album.

Throughout the whole album.

No, not quite. Are any of their other albums any different?

Keith Emerson's keyboard work more than makes up for any lack of strong guitar leads, and Greg Lake has plenty of distinct acoustic numbers.

This band isn't for you, so perhaps you should listen to another band? That's all I'll tell you. Let someone else respond to your 'problem'. I don't have the energy, I really don't.

I am not crazy about Ocean either. I think it's rather good, but I understand where Wheelspawn is coming from.
I believe Planets is my favorite, but it exists outside of this window. Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes takes my vote.

Look, I just don't like the album. I don't expect anyone to rebut me with a watertight argument, it's just not an album I appreciate. I just want to understand what other people find in the album that I'm not perceiving.

Floating is an album that gets a lot of praise. I don't like it, and prefer the first two albums.

How would me giving you my opinion of why I like Eloy, in particular, Ocean, change your perception of the music, especially when you clearly stated you don't appreciate it?

I love Ocean and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes, but I think quite highly of Floating as well. These may end up being my three favorite Eloy albums, but they've all been good so far.

I suppose I'll explain why I like Eloy's music so much:
1. They're genuine musicians. This music comes from their heart. They're not some band who have set out to copy or rip-off another band just for the almighty dollar (or in this case Euro). All of the musicians involved in Eloy seem to be honest about what they're doing and if they copy any band (Pink Floyd is the most obvious influence), then it's merely a starting point only to turn a musical phrase into something only Eloy could have done.
2. The driving, rhythmic force of their music is infectious. Of course, they can do slow songs and be incredibly melodic, but you get the sense that the bass and drums roles aren't minor ones.
3. The keyboards. Eloy have always had excellent keyboardists (there's NOTHING generic about any of their keyboardists' playing). I couldn't imagine an album like Planets WITHOUT keyboards. It just wouldn't be the same. They create huge textural walls of sound that give the music dynamics and color.
4. Bornemann's guitar playing and vocals. Some would see Bornemann's vocals as being a negative thing, but I don't. Again, I can't think of any other vocalist for this band who would pull off the same kind of emotion as Bornemann. If the vocal work wasn't enough, you get a guitarist who helps drive and lead the band to cosmic heights without ever being self-indulgent and always focused on the song at hand. Eloy simply couldn't have existed without Bornemann, it's that simple really.
5. Most important of all, I like the music. It moves me and inspires me. And this is all that matters in the end.

You seem kind of adamant about your stance on Ocean. I hope I'm wrong. Anyway, I wrote a post above of why I enjoy Eloy's music. I hope you get something out of it. I tried my best to explain, but sometimes explanations can get lost in translation.

Sometimes I have to listen to an album five or six times before I begin to appreciate it.
I'll try listening to the rest of Eloy's discography. Maybe one of their other albums will do something for me. Oceans isn't a terrible album; I just don't get the same feeling from it when I listen to Pink Floyd or Hawkwind.

Well, I despise Hawkwind, so you can have them! Anyway, do give them a chance to grown on you. I think they're a special band and have really brought me a lot of enjoyment these past couple of weeks. Let me also say that I hope you don't get the same feeling you get from Eloy as you do Pink Floyd. They're two entirely different bands. Eloy occupy a strange little sonic world of their own.

I just finished Dawn and I really enjoyed it. A great album actually. It has some beautiful moments. I especially like the song Gliding Into Light and Knowledge and then how it seamlessly goes into Le Reveil du Soleil - The Dawn. Really fantastic and I'll use the word infectious here yet again.
