I'm going to make my own rules and do a top 10 instead (in no order):
Choirs of the Eye - Kayo Dot By- - Bygones De-Loused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta Frances the Mute - TMV Fits - White Denim Five Peace Band - John McLaughlin and Chick Corea And the Glass Handed Kites - Mew Widow City - The Fiery Furnaces The Special Garage Concerts - Cardiacs Astrological Straits - Zach Hill and Peer Pressure Echylon's Mei isn't going to make my list because I'm just now taking a first listen. Pretty cool stuff. Don't love the vocals by any means, but I'm digging the arrangements so far. These guys should be instrumental! Having put TMV on the list twice, I feel like I should also note that their latest release Octahedron contains a whopping 2 decent songs on it. So dissapointing. I'm growing very far from the TMV fan that I was 3 years ago. Bixler's voice is just starting to get unbearable. Then again, I'm really picky about vocals. Anybody else feel the same?  Anyhow, don't get too wound up in peoples posts here.........Remember you are on a forum which 99.987645632% of the time is discussing what you think is good or bad....prog or not prog.....Music is art and everybody has an opinion.

Actually, I do a better Walter impression than Henry, since I would be incapable of compiling such a list. The only post 1989 prog band I listen to is SGM. |

Ok I agree with you there, and you gotta give props to a guy who stuck to his guns Walter did.......although I actually liked Walter and tried to joke with him normally.

Perhaps. I would struggle to compile a list of favourite prog albums of the last decade because most of mine like Kate Bush 'Aerial' and Tangerine Dream 'Purgatorio' are not prog so if you take out Porcupine Tree as well then I'm really stuck. The list as presented though is far too narrow a selection of artists.Was always going to get ripped to peices.

Honestly, a very predictable list that appeals to the majority of the more conservative prog fans, but wont find too many fans on this site.

The list covers a very narrow subset of prog. But I guess it is fairly fair in what it does cover.
Although I have never understood the appeal of Neal Morse's work in the slightest. |

Some interesting choices.
Looking at your list, you might enjoy Moon Safari's Blomljud, which is one of my favorite new prog / retro prog / whatever you want to call it. Doomsday Afternoon may well be the best of that ilk but that's already been mentioned many times.
I personally like Fear of a Blank Planet the best of recent PT, but that's just taste.
I Maudlin of the Well's Part the Second should be considered for such a list.
And I'll be nice and not mention any metal because that will take us somewhere else completely.

I've sampled it a few times. It's really in my realm so I need to get it and give it a few listens. I'm pretty finicky with my taste for harsh vocals. Some work just fine for me, some I hate, some have to grow on me.

I know what you mean. I think the entire album is on YouTube and if you want I can find and assemble the samples for you in the right order for a proper stream (unless you've done that already). I don't know about the jazz influences but it's possible. The Dordeduh debut (the band that now contains the songwriters from OM) will have some declared jazz influences (mainly in the percussives, apparently). So I wouldn't say no, but the traditional is much more prominent in OM. |
