Well, I'm a musician and I like both opera and heinously weird, atonal, free-form, balloon animal strangling extremes of modern jazz, so I don't know what that says about me.

And how does one quantify joy, anyway?I might argue that someone with musical knowledge is better able to appreciate prog, or any other genre for that matter simply by virtue of superior understanding (and for the record, I do not have much musical knowledge), but enjoy ...? Dubious.

Really? I thought it was a typo and he was trying to type "fat people". |
Well who knows, but he continues...

That makes more sense than it being short for the flatulent people (e.g. fart rock types).

^ This is great. We are actually discussing the meanings in his first post rather than the somewhat hazy subject. I do love a good conversation.

I loved prog before I knew anything of music, and many of the people I know who like prog (ok, they are not that many...) don't know music either, so surely you don't need to be a musician to fully enjoy prog, but having said that, after I studied music (I didn't reach far, just 2 years) I found that I could appreciate many subtle aspects which otherwise went unnoticed.
So, yes and no, anybody can fully enjoy prog but knowing a bit of music definitely helps getting the most out of it.

I am old, 47! I enjoyed Prog at the most seriosly way when I was 12 yrs old, so I remember THE day when I bought Genesis Live and Tales From Topographic Oceans, both issued under licence in ex Yugoslavia. Also, when abit older fellows were take me to the Jethro Tull Belgrade gig, to Return to Forever, and Deep Purple with SMAK as support act., all that in 1975 After those gigs, i could not sleep over the nights ! Well, I think that Prog Rock is for the kids.

From time to time, I too enjoy the unusual, relatively atonal, free-form modern jazz. John Zorn for example.
(FWIW I'm a musician).
But I'm not sure where the line of demarcation is drawn to make something qualify as "weird". I suspect the majority of prog could sound "weird" to a pop music fan. Adding the words "heinously" and "balloon animal strangling extremes" seem to indicate that we are talking about only the most excessively isolated and self-referential of atonal modern jazz. Top that all off by clarifying that we are talking only about people that listen exclusively to nothing else...
I can honestly say I don't believe I have ever met face to face with a person who meets this description in my entire life. It sounds like I've been fortunate!

I'm with you on this one. It's easy to listen and appreciate, but when you have a little knowledge of how music is composed, arranged, orchestrated, etc, you can have a closer and deeper perspective of the music.

Probably, more musicians do enjoy prog than non-musicians. BUT musicians will enjoy any music more because they kind of understand it from an "insider" point of view. Of course there is no intelligence, state of mind or outlook needed to feel music.
But the addition of being musician is that you can go "Oh! I like what they did there with that harmony...." which adds a certain profesisonal respect on top of the general enjoyment. Or maybe not?

The question is hard to understand without complete understanding of the intended context of "more". Is it the percentage of people that are prog fans or the quantitative measurement of individual appreciation. When considering who enjoys the music, my experience is that all of those I know that enjoy prog are some sort of scholar with artistic outlet. Some are musicians, but others are painters, movie directors, photographers, web designers etc. They are all intelligent. Then again, I don't surround myself with grade-school dropouts, so my sample pool is somewhat narrow from that context. As for as level of enjoyment, I clearly appreciate it more and on more levels than anybody else. Seriously, how do you measure that? There might be someone out there who has no artistic ability, no scholarly pursuits and no job who literally achieves orgasm through listening to prog. I think he/she (more likely he) has us all beat. Rock on progarast!

This question classified people to 2 categories: Musicians and not Musicians. But enjoying Progressive music may have too many reasons like reading books or watching movies.... This related to listener's background and psychologic and age of listener. In lower age like 11 or 12 , CHANCE is the important factor (IMO). In different countries this may have different reasons. Caltural background is important too. Enjoying Progressive music never give a special credit to listener. I mean progressive listener isn't special person or intellectual in all cases. Maybe he/she is musician maybe not. Maybe intellectual and maybe not. I want to say listening progressive music isn't a specific to categorize people.

I am not a professional musician but I like to play. The people best lured into prog are those that like music but have become tired of most of the stuff that is put out just for the sake of commercial success. This has been true since whenever you care to pinpoint the beginning of progressive rock.
