If I had to choose a favorite band, I would have to choose  Pink Floyd. They were my first step into prog a few years ago and I still love them. I really wish people would stop wearing t shirts with PF, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC etc logos on them when they have no idea who the band is. There should be a test before you buy it to see if they know the band's material.

I would like to get this PF t shirt, although noone will know of the existance of the album

this is a joke, correct?

And a terrible one at that...

Anyway, even though I disagree with that popularity-based point of view, I definitely like Pink Floyd 349837 times more than King Crimson. Only ITCOTCK is a real masterpiece in my ears, and maybe even Red. But PF gave me 4 absolute masterpieces (from DSOTM to TW) and a few near-masterpieces (Meddle) and great songs in between.

On the other hand, King Crimson gave me "Discipline" Dead

I voted for Floyd earlier.

For me The T has summed it up perfectly.  However I like Floyd 349838 times more LOL.

Much as I do like some KC, a lot of it does nowt for me, so it's an easy choice for me.

King Crimson for me hands down is the better, more experimental band. That's not to say that the Floyd are bad but rather that KC simply shows more virtuosity.

I can't vote either, because some times I prefer PF, other times KC.

A great case can be made for either; and several already have done so above.

But since a vote is a vote, KC gets it. After all, they're still adding to the pool--and providing quality stuff. Floyd's done, and, you gotta admit, AMLOR and Division Bell had obvious filler.  Does anyone really think that'd have been reversed? I didn't think so.

I really just can't decide! I would vote K(entucky) C(hicken) now, (I'm rediscovering RED, Lks Tng In Asp), but next month I could come here and vote P(hoton) F(actory), I just can't be absolute about this.

So, you base your vote in popularity???? LOLLOLLOL
Madonna would beat both... LOLLOLLOLLOLWink

But it's not like you see many kids around campus wearing Madonna shirts.  That said, I think kids wear those because they think it's cool and iconic (as is wearing a Che Guevara shirt). Anyway, personally I wouldn't base quality on kids' fashion sense or what is popular. Shirts with the "Dark Side of the Moon" logo look cool, and Pink Floyd has long had cool cache. King Crimson is generally more challenging from a mainstream perspective, and would be harder for mainstream listeners to digest (I don't imagine that most of those kids are Proggers, and might be donning Nickleback or Slipknot tees when they aren't wearing their Floyd tees -- or Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Doors -- which I consider quality iconic bands/artist -- etc).  When I was in college I didn't know King Crimson, and Pink Floyd was my favourite popular rock band, but King Crimson played an important role in this Prog journey that I'm still on.  King Crimson for me, though I really do like Floyd too.  I think Larks' Tongues in Aspic is a particularly terrific album

One might ask, is it particularly because of quality that bands like Pink Floyd, Foreigner, Boston, Queen, Styx, Bon Jovi, and Kim Mitchell regularly play on my local classic rock radio station rather than bands such as King Crimson, Magma, Comus, The Soft Machine, and Henry Cow, or it because it's more accessible that it has become part of the standard classic rock radio format? Popularity breeds popularity.  I do agree that Pink Floyd has withstood the test of time, and is "quality" music, however.

I agree with everything Logan said.

Young person here. I certainly know who King Crimson is and could pick a few people (non-proggers) my age who know who they are also. Granted I couldn't find anyone who knew who King Crimson is that doesn't know Pink Floyd but that's besides the point (not really but I'm just trying to make my argument more validWink).
I noticed more people wearing DSOTM shirts in high school than college and I can't tell you how many times I'd try to strike up a conversation about prog with someone in those shirts only to find out that person was completely ignorant of anything outside of DSOTM or The Wall. Those albums produced radio-friendly hits that still get played regularly on the local classic rock station and therefore are able to stand your test of time. So yes Logan, you are correct, they are far from proggers.
Anyway, I voted for King Crimson because I'm a huge fan of all of their stuff up to Three of a Perfect Pair with the exception of Beat which is ok. I really like a few Pink Floyd albums (Animals, Meddle, Wish You Were Here in that order) but neither the quality nor the quantity match KC.
Excuse the disjointedness of my post but I'm listening to The Talking Drum now so my mind is all over the place.

KC made songs like "Song Of The Gulls" and "Lark's tongue in aspic".

PF isn't up there with them in my opinion.

ELP definitely had their place in prog history but personally while a great band they never really broke the Nice/ELP mold. Their music was pretty much the same with very few attempts to expand. KC and PF both started out one way and, in Crimson's case, were able to survive many personnel and stylistic changes and still continue to amaze.Wink
