Case in point with two albums I personally know very well are Blackfield 2 and Minstrel in the Gallery.  Blackfield 2 is something I been listening to a lot recently and I love it, loads of beautiful mellotron, great lyrics and SW's melodies but seriously higher than Minstrel in the Gallery at 305 vs. 354.  I saw Tull in 1978 and when they played the song Minstrel in the Gallery it was nuts, just crazy explosive energy. Plus Baker St. Muse and other great songs.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying new prog isn't deserving of high scores, it's just weird to see those albums rated higher than what I consider classic music from my teenage years.   Kenmar

If you think that's bad, just wait until you see the top 100 Wink
I was surprised with certain albums and certain bands getting a huge reception and even more surprised about the classic albums left in the dust. For example, one of the top 20 albums of the site received a grand total of 6 points in this list. It's all really interesting.

This is because people vote for what they like, what they actually listen to, instead of what they feel should be rated higher. I would rank almost any Gabriel era genesis album higher than say, Ocean Planet . . but i like Gojira's album more. I actually listen to it, even though its not the 'classic' or 'masterpiece' Genesis might have put out. I think that says something important

Are you saying people vote for what they like right now? I don't think so, I voted for " The Lamb" as #1 even though I only break it out once a year. I still remember listening to it in its entirety every day.  No modern day album can compete with the soundtrack of your life!  I think its based of age to some degree, younger prog fans I suspect would vote newer albums higher. I think we should all sumbit our ages and cross reference with  average age of albums ]we picked.  I'm 48.  Kenmar

One thing I did notice in the voting was that some people only put in the minimum requirment of 50 albums were others did their best to get to the maximum of 250. I know not everyone has 250 albums (my list got to 210 ish) and that coming up with such a list can be quite difficult, but I think it would have made quite a difference if some people extended their lists a bit.

I don't know how other people decided when they'd stop listing albums, but I decided that I only wanted to mention albums I thought were *great*, not just good, and I barely scraped a hundred together. Of course, if you really have two hundred albums you think are great in your collection then I can only envy you...

Great list so far! Shocking to see many albums that were top 20 on my list so low such as Zarathustra, Rotters Club and Caravan's If I could... (that was my #3! ).

I cant wait for the final results!

Kenmartree - you'll have to wait to find out like everyone else

Sleeper - You're absolutely right. Even though albums at like 150 or lower don't have as many points, they have been proving to be equally important.

Everyone else - thanks for your interest. I've been graced with a snow day so no school which means I can start putting up the top 100 shortly.

#100 Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
(6 votes - 1163 points) Highest rating: #4 by KingCrimson776
Transatlantic is the greatest band ever. No band has ever written such epic music, and no one will ever come close again, unless by some miracle.(King Crimson776)

#99 Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
(6 votes - 1166 points) Highest rating: #18 by Moreitsythanyou
A very dense and textured album, Heavy Horses is a prog folk classic with its diverse melody and excellent vocals. (Moreitsythanyou)

#98 Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye
(5 votes - 1177 points) Highest rating: #1 by Acebad
Choirs is truly an adventure.it may take 2 years, it make take less, it may take a lifetime but given time this album grows lush and beautiful. Its challenging music, and almost the masterpiece it intends to be. (Keiser Willhelm - #8)

#97 The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album)
(6 votes - 1178 points) Highest rating: #11 by El Böthy
This album really shows how advanced the Beatles were for their time...it was 1968, noone was doing something like this!!!...really the Beatles were miles ahead of every one...and in many ways still are. (El Böthy)

#96 Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Darwin!
(6 votes - 1197 points) Highest rating: #1 by BigHairyMonster
An essential album to Italian Symphonic. Lush keyboards, soaring vocals, excellent songwriting and exectution. A terrific concept album. (Moreitsythanyou #41)

#95 The Who - Who's Next
(6 votes - 1204 points) Highest rating: #1 by 1800iareyay
As usual, the band brims with energy, sending pounding chords and drums cascading through your head. However, this release shows the band exuding some restraint, and it is definitely an improvement. (1800iareyay)

#94 The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
(7 votes - 1208 points) Highest rating: #6 by Heyitsthatguy
it still proves to be an interesting and engrossing experience from start to finish. At least, if you have the patience to sit through this 78 minute monster. (Heyitsthatguy)

#93 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
(6 votes - 1224 points) Highest rating: #16 by glass house
Physical Graffiti is a masterpiece of rock music as a whole. I cannot recommend this album enough.{1800iareyay #90)

#92 Return to Forever - Romatic Warrior
(6 votes -1233 points) Highest rating: #6 by glass house
It has not grown old over the many listens I've given it, and it is always pleasurable and incredibly entertain every time. Romantic Warrior is one of the finer jazz outputs ever, and is only a few minor shades from being an utter essential. (Shakespeare #66)

#91 Mahavishu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
(6 votes - 1249 points) Highest rating: #7 by KingCrimson776
This is their best (and most intense) album. Essential for any jazz fusion or progressive rock fan, and highly recomended for any rock fan. (King Crimson776)

#90 The Beatles - Revolver
(7 votes - 1255 points) Highest Rating: #18 by BigHairyMonster

#89 Devin Townsend - Terria
(6 votes - 1258 points) Highest rating: #1 by Keiser Willhelm
The music speaks volumes to me, convays a sense of grandure and beauty that i have heard or felt in very very few albums. (Keiser Willhelm)

#88 King Crimson - The Power to Believe
(7 votes - 1262 points) Highest rating: #26 by El Böthy
It’s a MASTERPIECE! I couldn’t believe my ears... this band, my favorite band, a band that is more than 35 years old, can make this stunning record in 2003!!! Wow, I was blown away... the Crimsons are still Kings!!!{El Böthy)

#87 Sigur Ros - ( )
(6 votes - 1276 points) Highest rating: #13 by Schizoid_man77
...Beautiful also being a good description. The awesome melodies, and sometimes moving arpegios of the guitar and piano are really what make the album, besides the intense climaxes. (Schizoid_Man77)

#86 Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
(7 votes - 1283 points) Highest rating: #19 by Heyitsthatguy
This album is quite possibly the bands most experimental as it takes in a wide range styles and tones in the album, whilst maintaining a more heavy metal sound than in previous albums. (sleeper #132)

#85 Emerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
(7 votes - 1295 points) Highest rating: #6 by Markosherrera
The epic atmosphere and intense playing on this album still amazes me everytime I listen to it...a fantastic album, with a great chilly and intense atmosphere lying over it. (BJ-1 #9)

#84 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui UXO
(7 votes - 1321 points) Highest rating: #10 by Heyitsthatguy
Breathtaking. This is one of the greatest post-rock records I've ever heard in my life...with its lush and sweeping orchestral arrangements and intense emotional peaks.(Heyitsthatguy)

#83 Comus - First Utterance
(6 votes - 1322 points) Highest rating: #3 by Evans
There is one word with which i can summarise "First Utterance", and that is "intense". Everything about it is intense. For those of you with a leaning towards the more grotesque, this is the album for you. (Evans)

#82 Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
(7 votes - 1322 points) Highest rating: #5 by Darkmatter, Lofcaudio
Riverside's second album is very necessary to have. It's not the most metal album of progressive metal, but it's a masterpiece. (darkmatter)

#81 Dream Theater - Awake
(7 votes - 1342 points) Highest rating: #7 by Heyitsthatguy
Its the best example of them balancing heavy metal with progressive rock. I like it. (Heyitsthatguy)

I didnt stop listing albums, I listed eveyone I have and few others that I had and still remember. Just because I have only 200 odd albums I saw no reason to limit my list to the 100 or so that I thought were very good (i.e. the 4 and 5 star albums), so I put them all in, whereas I know uthers have considerably more than 250 albums and can afford to only list their favourites and stil fill that 250.

Moreitsy: Thanks for useing a snipit from my review of Six Degrees...ClapEmbarrassed, strange that you picked one of my least favourit DT albums to paraphrase though.LOL

Well I was trying to get Josh to say something about it on AIM and I think his exact words were "it's.....good"
You were the only person who had it on their list and reviewed it.

#80 Queen - A Night at the Opera
(6 votes - 1343 points) Highest rating: #5 by Draconean
The variety of musical styles, the bombast, the vocal harmonies, Brian’s unique way of guitar playing, the constant changing of moods between ballad and rock in one song. Everything that made Queen such an interesting band is present here. (Draconean)

#79 Deep Purple - In Rock
(7 votes - 1351 points) Highest rating: #14 by Easy Money

#78 Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
(7 votes - 1358 points) Highest rating: #20 by laplace
It is, at heart, a collection of really great songs.I believe that due to the fact that Radiohead are still pushing boundaries and not sacrificing quality of songs in addition to the album being well crafted makes it an excellent addtion to any prog music collection. (Moreitsythanyou #28)

#77 Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
(7 votes - 1375 points) Highest rating: #4 by Acebad
Agaetis Byrjun showcases the atmospheric and melodic qualities that the band possesses. The result is haunting and artistic, somber and uplifitng. With their charming. sweeping soundscapes, Sigur Ros is a powerhouse of beauty and emotion that can certainly please the ears of many people.(Moreitsythanyou #14)

#76 The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
(8 votes - 1398 points) Highest rating: #12 by Oceansizzle
It contains some of the catchiest songs, and one of the most iconic album covers ever. The gold standard of pop records.  (cookieacquired #42)

#75 Opeth - Damnation
(9 votes - 1400 points) Highest rating: #16 by asimplemistake
This is an album full of beautiful, melancholic soft songs by Swedish metal gods OPETH. I found it very surprising that a metal band like OPETH would make an album like this, but I'm very glad that they did. I think almost everyone who likes prog would enjoy this album.(asimplemistake)

#74 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A#(infinity)
(7 votes - 1409 points) Highest rating: #2 by Keiser Willhelm
This is truly some of the most hauntingly beautiful music i have ever listened to. The gorgeous yet thunderous buildups, delicate guitar, the apocalyptic monologues, and beautiful melodies, this is incredible stuff and unlike anything you've listened to before. (Keiser Willhelm)

#73 Pink Floyd - The Wall
(9 votes - 1409 points) Highest rating: #11 by Atavachron

#72 Rush - Permanent Waves
(8 votes - 1416 points) Highest rating: #33 by Moreitsythanyou
My personal favorite Rush album, this album contains the perfect balance of catchy pop-based music and technical prowess.

#71 Camel - Mirage
(7 votes - 1417 points) Highest rating: #31 by El Böthy
But, it´s obvious where Camel are at their best... the softer side, the melodies! Ah, talk about a band with some of the most beautiful melodies you are gonna listen to. Camel is one of those bands that can appeal to the a hardcore Avant fan, to the most inexperienced rock listener. (El Böthy)

#70 Soft Machine - Third
(7 votes - 1424 points) Highest rating: #9 by Geck0
For me though, this is one of my favourite albums of all time, even with its minor flaws. The musicianship is astounding throughout and even though it may not be immediately apparent, the compositions are also excellent. So for me, this album is an essential album for lovers of groundbreaking jazz rock and minimilism. (The reviewer formerly known as Geck0)

#69 Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I
(7 votes - 1454 points) Highest rating: #16 by Kenmartree

#68 Black Sabbath - Paranoid
(7 votes - 1463 points) Highest rating: #7 by Zappa88
However, it's massive influence on all of heavy rock makes it an impossible album to underrate. While Sabbath would make some great albums after this, this will forever remain the high water mark of their career, as well as metal. (1800iareyay #25)

#67 Camel - The Snow Goose
(9 votes - 1480 points) Highest rating: #13 by asimplemistake
With beautiful melodies and great songwriting throughout the album, The Snow Goose is a near masterpiece. This is highly recommended. (asimplemistake)

#66 Anglagard - Hybris
(8 votes - 1494 points) Highest rating: #4 by Musicalsalmacis
The band itself sounds like it was a prog supergroup...Despite sounding like an amalgam of 70s prog heroes, Anglagard is one of the most original prog groups of the 90s. (1800iareyay #79)

#65 Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
(8 votes - 1528 points) Highest rating: #18 by Evans
Anyway, since then i've gone totally over to Marillion, and while i can see how people prefer Genesis, i still feel obliged to come to their defense and say why i think that the son is better than the grandfather. The whole concept makes so much more sense to me on a personal level than most albums. (Evans)

#64 Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
(9 votes - 1530 points) Highest rating: #14 by KingCrimson776
The music contained on this album is truly a delight to hear, especially for musicians.I would recommend it to anyone with musical tastes beyond the ordinary. (King Crimson776)

#63 Metallica - Master of Puppets
(7 votes - 1551 points) Highest rating: #11 by Draconean

#62 Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
(8 votes - 1560 points) Highest rating: #4 by cookieacquired
Now THIS is something you don’t hear everyday. This is an extremely well made album actually, and I think this is one of the most original and weirdest Avant-Prog I’ve listened to so far. (Bj-1 #11)

#61 Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane
(7 votes - 1570 points) Highest rating: #2 by Lofcaudio
This particular album is outstanding from start to finish. Daniel Gildenlöw’s impressive vocal talents are in full display accompanied by some very well-crafted songs. If you like music that rocks, I think you will agree with me that Remedy Lane is fabulous prog metal. (Lofcaudio)
