I think it would be fairly safe to say they sit somewhere between the standard definitions of modern prog and alt rock. It does surprise me that they haven't transformed their critical success into more of a commercial breakthrough, especially given the popularity of other kinda-prog-sorta-alt-rock bands like Muse.

Which is a reason to find it rather surprising that it is such a popular band here at a site devoted to so-called prog for so-called progheads. I find it rather more surprising that Porcupine Tree is so very popular amongst progressive music aficionados than it not being that popular amongst the general, more mainstream music community. As has been noted, it's one of the most popular modern bands at this site and gets a great deal of attention. Fear of a Blank Planet is the top-rated album of 2007 at this site, has a considerable lead in the non-collab top 2007 albums, and will probably be the top Collab album of 2007. Deadwing was the collaborator's top album for 2005. Perhaps they more obviously catered to a Prog audience before and people have remained loyal, or maybe it's acted as something of a gateway band for many (for people who don't know a lot of Prog and may have, after discovering this site, subsequently ventured into more adventurous and esoteric territory). Why is PT as popular amongst die-hard progheads as it is? Is it an easier band to get into for those into classic prog than most modern progressive bands? OF course it's going to have more appeal to people into, say, Progressive Metal than a band such as Rational Diet or whatever, and while the guys from PT aren't that young, perhaps the music has more youthful appeal than, say, Robert Wyatt (whose latest is quite poppy, but in a mature way). |

Simply put, they aren't this thread is the proof that most on this site find the band pretty average.
I like PT, but I don't think they are that special. If you compare them to alternative rock bands though, they rock! |

Compare them to The Strokes or Radiohead.

I liked Deadwing when I was first majorly getting into Prog, but now it does nothing for me. I've not even heard Fear of a Blank Planet, except for Anaesthetise and like most people posting in this thread, I find them quite average in terms of prog. However, they're a great alternative rock band and they ave a lot of talent, so they're not average in that context.
By the way, be nice to the newcomer, he may have said something that you disagree with, but that is no reason to call him names. |

Well, they found one more in me. I finally went out and bought some PT when I was in Paris. Picked up FOABP. It's good, very good.
But to be honest from the gushing praise they get I have to admit being somewhat underwhelmed...maybe I started with the wrong album?
The solo by Lifeson is a great touch though!

hahahha... the praise doesn't match the goods IMO.... they are a good group without a doubt... but I think you started with the wrong album...give them another chance. That album is not what it is cracked up to be. try In Absentia for the modern version or any of the early ones .. like The Sky Moves Sideways or my favorite Signify |

Wilson has often played down their Prog credentials so I don't think he'd argue with you there.
So maybe that's why Abigail's Ghost have never made it for inclusion here when they are Porcupine Tree in all but name.

Oh yeah? ... Well... let's wait for the announcement of prog-album of the year by PA collaborators and let's see how un-popular they are....Or is it that we say one thing (PT are average) and think another? (PT rule!)

Incidentally there's a short interview with Wilson on the front page of www.metalireland.com for those interested. It deals only with his recollections of recording Opeth's Blackwater Park.
It is short like I said, but a good read...he comes across well.

He registered in August 2006. swilson is his username and he has posted more or less 25 times. A fan, moi? ![]() Incidentally, it was on this forum he first spilled out the beans about Anesthetize. He never told the name of it but wrote that there would be a 17 minute long beast of a song on the next record. Anesthetize was unofficially called "The Beast" for the next four or five months over at the PT Forum ![]() Edited by Fritha - January 23 2008 at 16:30 |
