Well, I like many Scandinavian artists, but I think Jan Garbarek is my favorite, Prog or otherwise.

What is more, I can give my view as a Finn here. Bands like Magyar Posse, Uzva, Tabula Rasa are more popular than ever. At the same time we are getting bands like Von Hertzen Brothers which is one of the most sold bands this year, and great neo-prog.
Alongside with all this we have the oldschool bands Wigwam And Tasavallan Presidentti going strong. Wigwam is still composing, still going around the country playing awsome gigs. (seen them twice in one year). As I have seen Tasavallan Presidentti, who are actually about to finish their to-be awesome record Tasavallan Presidentti -six. And at that starting a gig round, coming to my city as well, an dI'm so going to see them.
I think this is because the whole prog rock scene is coming back to life in finland at least, more and more bands do prog, and so the old ones are popular again. Jukka Tolonen goes around the Scandinavia doing high class gigs too.
And with bands like Flower Kings and Kaipa of what I listen a t the moment, the passion to prog rock and it's popularity here in the north is very respectable. Not to mention the Kalevala progressive rock epic from a few years ago.

An interesting thing about swedish prog is that it, except for maybe Opeth and Evergrey never gets any attention by anyone, the only ones that listen to this music in sweden are those funny-dressed old men that hang around libraries and communist students in their twenties. and then of course there is me

Yep, I have to agree, us Brits have lost the crown abit even though we still have a firm grip in other areas espcially in the psychdelic/space rock and the more indie avant-garde area. The US and Scananvia have mostly come on with avengence.
I love some of the stuff comming out of scandanavia:
Opeth,
Circus Maximus,
Meshugah,
Pagan's MInd,
POS,
Flower Kings,
Evergrey,
The band from outta space (great space rock band, very hawkwind, great debut album title 'Im only in it for the space rock' what a title! )
Not Strictly prog but still rock:
Hammerfall,
Children of Bodom,
Fintroll
Dream Evil
So yeah, Scandanvia is most certainly the place which is teh most 'happening' prog-wise, many good and future legendary bands ariseing.
Therion aren't scadanavian they are german.
