Maybe, but at 6'4", I've got one hell of a reach!

Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact.

All fathers should have a license to smote, or at least serious deterrents.

My youngest daughter showed great promise at an early age by putting ELP's "Tarkus" on the CD player completely of her own volition one day when she was 7 or 8, and I heard her humming BLACK SABBATH's 'Spiral Architect' around the same time, too. But it did not last - she now refers to Prog Rock as "vulgar"!

What does she listen to Fitzcaraldo? In comparison to other forms of music i dont see prog as vulgar. conjures images of old men with long beards and pipes. one day...one day

I get that too but only when she is being nice.    How old is she?  Mine is 19.  I can't tell you a lot of what she listens too but one thing she did learn is she likes bands that nobody has heard yet.  That is always special. It makes you feel unique.

Not mine...it has to be on one of those top 40 radio stations 1st. Her only hope is if she finds a boyfriend who likes good music(the last one she had liked Metallica and System of a Down alot and she opened her horizons a bit and gave them a listen and surprisingly liked them-I even tried Dream Theatre knowing she liked the above mentioned bands and nope...hardly gave them a chance. She's 16 by the way

Well my son goes from Peter Yorn to LeTigre to Peaches and Lil Kim... He covers the map on bad music...  He's 26.

Altho I'm sure he could sing you any ELP song..but he's tired of anything FLoyd.  I was playing "Helplessly Hoping" by CSN not too long ago.. and he actually liked that...

THIS IS ELP

i think music is completly based off taste. my taste isn't better or worse than anyone elses, it's just different. i really love ska, and i'm not a huge fan of marylin manson. where my girlfriend loves mm and is pretty indifferent towards ska. it's just a prefference.

My kids seem to be all over the board. They consider the music I listen to as weird. However, I did catch one singing "June" from Spock's Beard. My oldest daughter (22) is the most daring on the "stuff you won't hear on the radio" styled music. I've kicked down a bit of prog and experimental stuff to her with positive reviews.

My daughter has been listening to prog for half her life as I have previously stated. But there's a downside. I can't get to a concert without the little witch tagging along. This month it's Wishbone Ash then the Carl Palmer band then Mostly Autumn, then whoever is good that's coming to Glasgow. But her taste is slipping. She went slipknot and slayer recently and your truly was in the pub with his mates as they are not my taste, but that's only a short reprise for me but what the hell on the whole her taste goes from Crimson to Todd to Yes an on and on she's a prog child and shows no signs of losing it.

She's just coming up to her 12th birthday and listens a little to the usual pop stuff on TV but also plays the piano (quite well, actually) and enjoys classical music (particularly ballet scores), musicals (old and new) and some middle of the road stuff like Sinatra (seems to be quite a fan!), Nora Jones, etc.

I had to laugh when she used the word "vulgar" to describe Prog, though! We went to the ballet a couple of days ago to see a modern version of Swan Lake and she described the revised story as "questionable" (which I have to say was spot on!)

None of my children (my eldest is at university) like Prog, and neither does my wife. She tells me that a lot of Prog sounds similar (and a lot "like Genesis") and is pretentious, including the lyrics. Actually, I agree with her. But it's just a style of music that I and you guys enjoy, in the same way that we like other genres of music (except rap and hip-hop! - thank goodness my family has the same opinion as me on that!)

Hi, been checking out the actual site for a while now, and finally decided to post on the forums.

I'm 14, and my on-line friend got me into Dream Theater at first which sparked my love for prog music. I was telling my Dad about the music and he really got into it too. It's really cool, I pretty much tell him about new bands I've found, and ask him to check them out to see if he likes them. He buys a lot of used CD's of the bands I like and I just get to mooch off his set.

He really influnced my tastes though. He got me into, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, STP, and others.

Lol little witch..ha i find that hard to believe..you should enjoy the time you have together and seeing great live bands together. As for Slayer and Slipknot it shows a wide taste and willing to try new different things.

but im sure her love for prog will always be strong and nothing can break that....ah Todd...*daydreams* lol .

they aint that bad.
