Russell Allen has a greater range than James LaBrie... Listen to "Lady of the Snow" or "Candlelight Fantasia" and then to "Inferno" or "Incantations of the Apprentice". And I now not that much singers who can hold a tone that long like Russell Allen... He has much more sustain than James LaBrie will ever have and furthermore Russell Allen sings much more soulful, feeling and much more pleasant. |
Soulfull singing, how about what James does on Learning to Live or the entire Scenes From a Memory album? Russell Allen is a typical heavy metal singer in a progressive band, James LaBrie is just an all around great progressive vocalist singing in more progressive projects.

I just wondered because you talk as if you've never heard Russell before...
So, you mentioned Russell is a heavy metal singer...
Symphony X does a lot of progressive power metal, that's the reason why he sings in that style.
That doesn't mean that he doesn't fit into other stuff,
he would also be a perfect pop-singer and he also perfectly fits into progressive music...

I LOVE both of them, they got me into prog rock, prog metal in particular. I still haven't come across anyone else who can quite match them. That said, I didn't want to shirk out of making a choice, so I went Symphony X. Not because they're any better or worse than Dream Theater, but just because I like their style more - the classical influences, the epic choruses, etc.
