It's probably cheap and fanboy-ish to vote for my favourite band, but
I'm going with them anyway. That would be Dream Theater. I mean, it's a
theater... of dreams! The only thing harder to contemplate is which
part of your body to nickname "Pink Floyd".

I've heard it's a great cigarette is what I meant to say.

That's better, had me going for a second. I hear DDD is back up on tuesday, have you heard anything similar? |
yeah, just like last time it went down. Having a blast over here
though to be honest with you. I do need to update those lists
though, I was planning on doing that this weekend.

This place is an ok substitute. Though I am not as keen on some of the lesser known bands mentioned here. I still enjoy the great prog discussion. It is like our little corner of DDD, only expanded. That being said, I still prefer the DDD atmosphere. Go down to the off-topic poll section, people are dissing DDD.

Camel ciggarettes I shouldn't say that entirely..I kinda dig the Turkish Silvers, but...Lucky Strike Lights the best!
Anywho! Poverty's No Crime, now there's a great band name, hah! I really like Porcupine Tree for some reason.

well to be honest, DDD is much more chaotic then this one is. TBH I've
tried to get Bassfreak to be a bit more....harsh in cracking down on
some of the crap that goes on.

There are many great names I like. I agree with Psychotic Waltz mentioned earlier in this thread. Pink floyd and Dream Theater as well. But I have a "soft spot" if you will, for the names of "post rock/experimental" bands - Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mount Zion (twice for the same man), Explosions In The Sky. The names aren't cool, but they have a sort of attracting quality to them that makes me want to hear them. Although I have heard responses (which I can understand) that say these are so stupid names that alienate potential listeners. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - I like as well. there are probably more, so i'll check in again when remembering them. Oh, I also love the Italian band names - PFM, Quella Vacchia Locanda, Banco (you know the rest) etc.

I've always had a hang for obscure names. I tend to like names like
Camel, Caraven, Kayak, Kebnekise, Gong and Yes. I voted YES in this
poll.
If I coul'd choose freely, my vote would go to EGG. Best bandname ever.

Yes is such a simple name, and it describes their positive outlook on life. Pink Floyd is great too, and the reason I got into Spock's Beard was because I love Mirror, Mirror (my favorite Star Trek episode!). But the name Jethro Tull does not compare with Ian's Bag O' Blues. Talk about a great name!
The name Yes can be troublesome, though, because I was once reading a book about rock and roll, and I looked in the index for Yes, and it listed about 20 different page numbers. Excited, I looked at every page, but, alas, for some reason the index had listed every single instance the word "Yes" appeared at the beginning of a sentence! It had nothing to do with the band!

I like "Spock's Beard" - it is hard to go past that name when you are a Star Trek fan.
Other greats are: King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and some not mentioned in the list - Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Gravy Train, Uriah Heep, Glass Hammer, Radiohead, Pavlov's Dog, Egg, Gong and Hawkwind - just for starters.
( Some interesting NZ band names: "Tall Dwarfs"; "Look Blue, Go Purple"; "Straitjacket Fits"; "Split Enz" and "Crowded House" - the latter two many of you would have heard their music.)

Hello, my first post. Why I chose this thread is
anyone's guess.
I always liked the way the words "Emerson, Lake
and Palmer" rolled off the tongue but there's no
imagination in using the last names.
I came so close to voting King Crimson but...
I have to go with Tangerine Dream.

Better than this: "Matching Mole" - which is "machine mole" (Soft Machine in French) with a Brittish accent.
My vote goes to Procol Harum, which was a cat's name, and I love cats!

Does anyone know how Spock's Beard got their name?
