Best Genesis Album?

Duke is my favorite.

Second would either be Selling England by the Pound or A Trick of the Tale (so one of those two would be third, too).

Fourth would be Abacab.

Fifth the 1983 self-titled.

(I suppose I should post this in the unpopular opinions thread, but that's most of my opinions, so I'd be stuck only posting in that thread.)

I consider "Seeling England by the Pound" (follow by "Nursery Crime") not only  the best album of GENESIS as well as one of more representative album of symphonic-prog style and certainly from all progressive rock history !!!

Musically, The Lamb holds up remarkably well some 41 years after its release. I wonder if the first album would have had more takers if Jonathan King had not trampled all over it?  Weak in the drum department, for sure, but listening to Archives 67-75, CD4, their songs were more listenable than they became in the 80s...

I love The Lamb. I agree it stands up musically very well after all this time. I share Tony Bank's view opinion of the story though. To me it sounds like the poetic ramblings of a sixth former trying to be 'deep' However, I like the atmosphere of the music and the slightly more grittier edge to the music. When I first bought this album as a teenager I listened to it every day for weeks on the headphones getting totally lost in the music. I couldn't believe that a rock band could have such musical imagination. I think this was the first Gabriel Genesis album I heard.

I've always imagined replacing The Battle Of Epping Forest with Suppers Ready would make SEBTP the ultimate prog album by anyone ever...

But, it's difficult to argue anyway against an album that has The Cinema Show and Firth Of Fifth, and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight.

But Foxtrot and Trick Of The Tail do push it close.

The Lamb...I still don't know....I think it's possible that one day I will think it's the best...but it's still not yet...
