Thanks for that hug Bob. Much needed after that ordeal The last time I listened to Fernando was together with an old friend of mine. We were fixing to go out on the town, but instead of drinking beers at my apartment where all the brilliant music resides, we somehow got stranded at his dad's place, and there was LITERALLY nothing to chose from. We then decided to do a 'sarcastic' warm up and found the most terrible tune we could think of, Fernando, and then proceeded to put it on repeat. 3 hours later we stumbled into the city with bleeding ears and a huge grin from ear to ear. I guess I consider ABBA to be part of that special kitsch group of artists that are so incredibly bad that there actually is something funny about them. Sorta like putting Smurf hits on the ol stereo. A whole lotta fun if I'm inebriated but horrendous if I'm not. My parents love ABBA though Edited by Guldbamsen - June 18 2016 at 13:24 |

I can totally get that. I'm actually not big on the vocals either. Diamanda Galás singing that song (with major tempo changes) would be something else. :) Edited by Logan - June 18 2016 at 14:01 |

I can't stand Ghostbusters either. As for the Let's Dance track, I was always much more into the B side of that album, but I quite like China Girl. |

Can't help but notice that if a song has been played too often on the radio has ruined the number for many. Now, if you'd only heard it once or twice would your perceptions be different?
Noticed one of the most hideous covers ever mentioned so I shall do it a disservice by shaming it again. Scissor Sisters and that dreadful version of Comfortably Numb. That's when you feel sorry for whoever had to endure the session, the producer, engineer, coffee making personnel. Did they get permission for that monstrosity? I mean... even Van Morrison's singing on the Berlin show is more enjoyable than that and that is on my least favourite of my favourite's list. There was a number... Usher I think, (dunno or forgotten the name of the song) that had a phone ringing in it. Used to drive me mad. Foo Fighters... (I'd do as requested and name a song but if memory serves me well I've forgotten. Struck me as bland and featureless. Which reminds me, 80s pop. Anyone familiar with the New Tricks episode where our heroes had to visit an 80s radio station will understand what I mean... By the way I used to hear all this scheisse at the gym. No gym now, no audio dreck. If the rap has good craft i.e. nice rhythm in the vocal (heard one or two here and there, then no problem). If the rap I heard and dislike was rock or pop I'd dislike it just as much. Hip Hop where they think they know what they are doing drum wise (it is like an assault without and end) also drives me spare. Find out about how drumming works please. God the public have no sense me thinks... An all time low point (I really recommend not playing the link - warning label ... John Rowles - Cheryl Moana Marie) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCxWdVJTlpY David Gilmour said he hated rock steady vibrato; set his teeth on edge. Me too. Here is an example. And this is dental torture without the anesthetic. What next? Oh yes. Radiohead - OK Computer - cannot isolate one track from this - it is consistent. Supposed to be the DSOTM of the '90s? By what standard was this assessed? I've heard garage punk new wave kids better than this. Oasis sounded like vocal geniuses with great guitar virtuosity than this. At least half of Kid A was listenable. What a drop in standards. I think I'd rather hear... The Village People. At least there was a lot of comedy associated with this (The US Navy ejected "In The Navy" because of those gay undertones... In The Navy, your turn in the barrel, in the navy, what a lovely funnel, in the navy, love your propeller, in the navy, we can be your fellers...) I think they were the word but I may be wrong)... but still these pop disco classics have people entertained... still, it makes me cringe. (Apologies to gay people and pro gay people - just my take on this act and this song, frankly I could careless about anyone's sexual orientation). So I shan't mention Abba's Ring Ring in case of double offence. ;) A hated song by a favourite band. Black Sabbath do Elton John. Only worse. Was his daughter better on her version of Changes or not? Only liked two Ozzy / Ozzy era Sab ballads (Solitude and Planet Caravan) and the first (but not the last sap I'd hear from this fabled band of electric troubadours). The last was the over produced whineathon (like my post) She's Gone. At least that has the benefit of the classic riff Dirty Women after it. Durham Town - Roger Whitaker. Oh what a hideous upbringing. Child hood as well. Songs of Wigan Pier and all - the contents of my old man's old tape collection. Another horrible MOR song I love to satirize. Hard core Middle of the Road band The Bellamy Brothers (we are sinking low and obscure) and "Let The Drugs Flow - (In Your Bloodstream). Oops I meant Let Your Love Flow Like a Mountain Stream. Proud Mary - CCR. Ruined by fan teachers at school. And if I heard it once I would never want to hear it again. Kicker, was in one band many years ago where the others insisted on covering this. I was enthusiastic about that until they realized I meant six feet under. This is why musos do drugs. Moonshadow - Yusuf Islam. After the opening number which is great) the rest of the Also Sprach Zarathustra suite by Richard Strauss. Not one of his immortal symphonies but whiny dated violin wittering. I was so disappointed. Only part of a song but my least favourite Floydian moment. A Spanish Piece from More. The loud eating and talking... No. Not good. Almost(?) as bad as the vomiting by Roy Harper at the end of the otherwise excellent Jugula album. The Long And Whining Road - The Beatles. Tortured with the string version. Your Own Special Way - the otherwise superlative Genesis. Mike and his Mechanics did another like it... memory serves me well, I've forgotten the title. Brilliant. Why should even the great ELP get off scot free. They don't. Any of Greg Lake's numbers on Works still make me feel blood draining from my face as the ol' physiognomy strives to match the pallor of his and Sinfield's endeavours. One song, and it's not on this album. I Believe In Father Christmas may be the best Christmas song of all time (along with Slade's) but it still has an automatic gag reflex (nearly like Slade's - due to the repetiton). Mind you I do like (or don't mind) Snoopy's Christmas so what do I know? Circus Of Heaven - Yes. Just for the kid. No no lions, ha, ha, unhappy kiddo? Good, that makes two of us. Equality. We Are The World by a cast of 100s. Shudder, horror, puke. Lionel Richie - Hello. Exacerbated by the appallingly bad taste video. But this loathsome ballad has horrors nameless for all it's near 140 minute length. I think it's safe to say camp, whiny, sentimental, emotionally manipulative , shallow, exploitative MOR usually has me pleading to hear the Sex Pistols' unique approach to melody and performance art ... or Leo Sayer's Greatest Hits. "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (hahahahahaha). Fun topic. I can indulge several favourite emotions. Derision, hatred, contempt. |

Out of curiosity, have you heard Iggy Pop's original recording of "China Girl"? (He and Bowie co-wrote it, and Pop recorded it about 6 years before Bowie.) |
