Some people seem to be trying to make sure only ONE perspective of politics is being talked about around here.
On this forum I have mentioned a number of times some things that I felt were unbalanced - I have signed out Republicans, and in return people have said to me "well, plenty of Dems do that too." But what if it weren't so balanced? What if it could be scientifically proven that it is not balanced? http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/01/conspiracy-theory-partisan-bias http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/09/03/conservatives-and-liberals-have-different-brains-studies-show/ |

It sure does seem that way doesn't it, Geoff? I will henceforth refer to them as the "Borg". They desire to either assimilate you into their collective or blow up your ship/planet.

So Geoff, you were once a republican. Did you change your brain in order to become democrat? Interesting. I guess the surgery must have been quite expensive.
And those people who aren't Rs or Ds? Do they have orangutan brains? Basically everyone outside of the US is some sort of strange animal it seems. And people like I that favor many postulates of libertarianism but am willing to accept ideas from the "other side" like health care for all? Is my brain slowly becoming like jello or something? Stupid pseudo science. "Peer reviewed" doesn't mean is the ultimate word of science or anything else by the way. For university I have read hundreds of peer reviewed articles in scientific journals and many are rubbish.

^the article said that a person's political persuasion can change their neurological traits. So it's not just a one way thing, where the brain chemistry affects politics, your politics can also affect your brain chemistry. And some people just become nicer and cooler Teo. I'm not sure how much stock I put in that study though really. I think there would have to be a lot more research done into that, if it is even worth researching.

^Really Doc, that article is a few paragraphs that say nothing. Reading the actual paper would probably show how pooy done it is, but that would be a waste of time. Real scientific studies are usually not that fun to read .

ONE perspective of politics eh?
I sure hope you are referring to a certain thread and people
Its funny, the thread is designated as a libertarian area...so you know what the majority opinion will be, no one makes you go in there and engage in discussion, anyone can make a thread about anything yet the libertarians dominate??
Sorry that your views get challenged and "forced to assimilate" but that's what the thread is designed for!
It'd be like someone coming to PA and saying "OH WTF everyone here likes prog, why is it all they talk about? Why is it when I disagree they try to "assimilate" me?" I never knew presenting different views and trying to defend them = trying to destroy yours. How little self confidence you must have!
But thats the problem I've noticed with many regardless of beliefs...freedom of speech for me, oh I dont like what you say f**k you. Here is my view, you have a different one? f**k you why are you trying to pester me? I have a right to my religious views, they are right Im sure of it, you feel the same about yours? f**k you, burn in hell. Edited by JJLehto - January 25 2013 at 11:48 |

Yes. If a thread is called "Libertarian", probably the perspective might be easy to infer. Of course, discussion on the subject is welcome and views are constantly challenged.
PA welcomes Geoff if be wants to create a new "Democrat thread" or "Marxist Leninist thread" or "Fascist thread" or "Republican thread" or whatever else. |

Yeah I've seen things like that study numerous times. It's not new news...I remember back in '04 after Kerry lost...all over xanga there was the chart of states by IQ and how all the blues were in order (on the higher end) thus "proving" lol Republicans are dumb. Never mind the differences in IQ were literally points..like 98, 97, 96. However you can use "science" to justify your views I guess. I never knew that was the point of science!
What you post is no better than tobacco companies paying "scientists" to "study" findings and prove that smoking is fine! Sad. Not that I'm a republican anyway, I like gay rights, drugs, and not being imperialist

BTW admins, lemme qualify I dont like drugs, just the idea of legalizing them.
But ya know Dean if you want an all male LSD induced orgy, well I'm just throwing it out there!
Perspective indeed. I was lucky enough to be around/close to people with very differen mindsets and view poins then me. Which is why I can't take posts like that seriously. Not saying there aren't stupid, closed minded conservatives but I've met way too many very smart, very friendly, middle and lower class Republicans to drink the "they are dumb racist rich" kool aid. Nope. I came to a point in my life where I was so miserable that I left the church. And when I did that, I realized I had no right to judge anyone. And when that realization struck me, I started to change. I eventually hit a place where I had made such a mess of things that I had nowhere to turn to fix it, and ended up going back to church. And through that strange path of events I eventually (it took a while) realized how grace works: you can't receive it if you aren't willing to extend it. That's why liberal politics appeal to me more - they extend grace without fear that they will be taken advantage of. It's like the Doc said: your politics can change the way your brain works. For me, as my views changed, my attitude changed, and I began to piece together my political views in parallel with my religion and my new philosophy of life. |

It isn't the attempts to assimilate that are the issue. I expect no less. I come there to put my perspective in there, and whether it appears so or not, to listen to the side's perspective. I expect an attempt at conversion. It is, errrr, the "vigor" with which some do it. And the "well if you won't assimilate, then I hate you" thing. Not that you have ever been that way, at least not that I've seen, Brian. But if I started a democrat thread, it still wouldn't be nice of me to abuse the non-democrats who post there.

Thank you, I do try my best to always be calm, fair and listen to others and disect and explain myself rather than bash (which is my posts are horridly long and rambling). Also I keep in mind that fact people don't always agree with me and thats OK Just ya know, you do go to a thread knowing what its about...seems a little much to be upset at vigor thats used. Especially since I know for a fact the overwhelming majority of PA is much more slanted to your views, I like the idea that 5-7 guys are domianting the site
All I care about at this moment...the USPS needs competition. I have to go to the post office day at my current site, and its the slowest, rudest place I've seen. Makes the DMV jokes sound like paradise!

What worked for you doesn't have to work for everybody else. That's the difference. You want to impose a "formula" on everybody. I just want to let people be.

I enjoy political debate. But I enjoy clean and respectful political debate.
I have had issues with USPS, but I've also had issues with UPS and Fedex, so...I'm not sure competition is necessarily the answer, although I would not rule that out either as a possible solution to the problem. I also think there might be a trade-off there, where customer service might improve, but without the regulated monopoly, prices could rise. Then I'll have to pay more for the shipping all those CDs I order.

But with libertarian policies regarding minimal regulation in place, you wouldn't have to worry about the government shutting down music streaming sites! |

In fact I'm such a music nerd I once wrote a short paper for a college econ class about why file sharing/streaming is OK, and actually a good thing. And that was before I was even libertarian
I kid somewhat about USPS, wouldn't be fair to base my horible, horrible experiences with one on it all.
Though still, it could use competition. Some of these locations are so bad/inefficient (and I know the mail has been losing money) that they really shouldn't continue on as is.

It's fun that you say science, then you provide those links. |
