True. It's better than Coheed being in PR at least. |

It's been a long time since I've been anywhere on this site besides the forums. When did Thom Yorke's solo album get added? It's rated unfairly low, I'll have to boost it up.

That's always a good idea... I did the same with some other albums, which had been rated way too low by the (very few) reviewers.

I really should have. They had a show in Columbus and that's only about 2 hours away.
I had a friend who went to the one last night though and apparently Enslaved opened for them. I've heard some good things about that band and I should probably check them out sometime. Did they open at your show too? Oh, and what was the setlist? |

Hell yeah they opened our show too, I love enslaved, incredible prog black/viking metal band. Check out their latest one Vertebrae, it's really good. I just got into them a few weeks before I heard about our show so it was perfect.
and the setlist was:
-Heir Apperent
-Ghost of Perdition
-Godhead's Lament
-Wreath
-Karma
-Hessian Peel
-Closure (with an extended jam, pretty cool)
-The Night and the Silent Water
-The Lotus Eater
ENCORE
-Demon of the Fall
it was great, we lined up 2 and a half hours early so we'd get great spots. Me and my friend got dead center, right up against the railing, incredible. I liked the setlist from last tour better, but enslaved was a WAY better opener, and they sounded amazing either way. I guess you have to wait for another album for them to come out again

Does Plato not realise that arranging things (in the Greek... English translations tend to helpfully avoid rendering these in the same way, along with his sarcastic moments) to trick his readers is just a berkish thing to do in the context of writing philosophy, and it undermines your arguments... this bit is just ridiculous in terms of subverted sentences.

Was that supposed to be a question, Rob?
I've never read Plato. I don't know Greek. So therefore, I have no clue. |

No, it was a rant The question mark deficiency was because the question was so rhetorical it didn't want one... I've just come across the fantastic sentence 'ἀπιστῶ μέν [σοι] ἔγωγε, ἦ δ᾽ ὃς ὁ Σιμμίας, οὔ' They're talking about the memory-by-recollection argument, which isn't very good anyway, and Socrates has just asked if Simmias apisteis - disbelieves or doesn't trust the argument. This particular gem has the very emphatic egoge (generally rendered 'I, for one', it's a very emphatic way of saying 'I', and 'men', which usually is the first part of a two part clause... on the one hand, on the other and so forth... so, of course, if you read the first half of the thing: 'I for one certainly don't believe [you/this argument],' said Simmias, And it doesn't help that the 'said Simmias' is very illogically done, with both hos and ho (which are the same thing anyway, it'd be like 'he Simmias said' or something, and I haven't seen it done like that much at all elsewhere. It's done like that exclusively to make the 'he said' bit longer, I'm convinced... So, so far we have 'I for one certainly don't believe [you],' said Simmias, and then 'ouk', which ends up with 'I for one certainly don't believe [you],' said Simmias, 'NOT!' Meaning, 'I don't disbelieve [you],' said Simmias. So, essentially, Plato has just pulled a Borat-esque joke on his readers, which is clouding his philosophical arguments, defying logical sense and generally being very irritating. I suppose I could also mention that the 'de' in 'e d'os' could be perceived as picking up the 'men' in the first half, but that'd detract from the point. I mean, Plato, it's not funny, it's not clever, cut it out! So, yes, that rant might give you an idea of what I mean. There's also a bit where he messes around with Greek word order and regularities just to give you second thoughts as to who's speaking for about five seconds... great. And it's irritating because on occasion he writes really nice Greek. |

Well Hos are just like a Ho, only there's more of them and if you're that way inclined; likely more fun.
I'm still confused as to what you're getting at. |

Yes, if and when I get round to reading Plato, I'll read an English translation. I'll do my research first and make sure I pick a good translation.

Well, yes, but if you've already said hos, you don't need to say ho, it's very silly. Essentially, his sentence revolves around a delayed 'not'. As in, for instance, 'discussing Plato is for cool people - NOT!' Now, it being narrative, Plato can throw a 'he said' in the middle, and he does so with the longest and most utterly silly way he can. So, we have. 'Discussing Plato is for cool people,' he said, '- NOT!' as 'I, for one, certainly don't believe [you],' said Simmias, '- not.' Greek is fantastic for this sort of douchebaggery: there's oukoun, which means 'not' or 'therefore' depending on where the accent is. |

Maybe because Plato was about before Dictionaries and the like, he actually meant therefore?
And what's wrong with saying it that way anyhow? Is he not allowed to have a chuckle at the readers expense? |

He is?! /stock sarcasm Eh, translations suck (well, sort of, they help me read things I otherwise wouldn't, but that's not the point)... the Phaedo translations I've read (in part, mainly, read the penguin in whole) tend to insist on playing up their perceptions of Socrates and consequently embellish, misrepresent or generate content to fit them rather than acting fully professionally. To be fair, Plato's difficult to render because of the Greek technical terms which don't always correlate to obvious English ones, and there are times when he's just so non-specific it causes translators to second-guess what he means rather than just leave the literal rendition. Plus, this is my domain of nerdship |
