The Police were a band of great instrumentalists; who knows how their sound might have developed if they didn't become hugely popular

also I'm on my way to see the 2019 line-up of Flipper live, it's their 40th anniversary tour with Ted Falconi, Steve DePace, David Yow and Mike Watt
didn't think I'd ever see them live but miracles exist I guess

So for the concert of Flipper with David Yow of The Jesus Lizard and Mike Watt of the Minutemen: it was alright. They opened with The Light, The Sound, The Rhythm, The Noise and then played through a bunch more of their classics; I recognized The Way of the World, Shine, Ha Ha Ha, Life, Shed No Tears, Life Is Cheap, Sacrifice, Ever, Brainwash and Sex Bomb, approximately in that order, and what sounded like possibly some TJL songs inbetween. Steve and Ted played just like you say them on those videos from the '80s, with the energy and noise fully present, and Mike Watt played along very well but David Yow seemed to be both trying too hard to be nihilistic and deranged while not caring enough about the original material to really pull it off convincingly. Of course Flipper is all about the happy accidents of not giving a sh*t but that doesn't really come across when he forgets his lines very obviously about 3 or 4 times, or chooses to repeat some weighty line literally 10 times instead of 1 or 2 on the original version, to the point where it becomes a bit silly or the fact he sung almost the entirety of 'Life' one beat too early, which is pretty embarrassing if the entire backing instrumentation is just four chords repeated over and over... Still they clearly had a lot of fun, lots of quips between the players, some of them intentionally f**king up the intros to some songs so that they had to start over, David immediately going back to drinking beer in the corner every time his parts in a song were done, him throwing the mic in the audience for literally everyone failing to properly time the chorus of 'Way of the World', and Brainwash, which is basically a novelty track anyways, where the vibe really came together nicely. Biggest disappointment of the night though: asking for some wodka at the bar and having to pay €4,70 for two sips worth of sugary crap in a plastic cup...
