This album might set off your Neal Morse religion aversion.

This is Barney that we're talking about here, magnets can set off his religion aversion alarm.
My anti-religion stance is based purely on good sound pillars of scientific enquiry and humanitarianism......
religion poisons peoples minds like no other meme's except those based on racial purity......
In every case religious piety = total lunacy Stern Smile
Mind you we have a 21st century witch hunt taking place in the UK at the moment where a lot of dead geezers are being labelled at posthumas paedophiles - and they can't possibly defend themselves unless those psychics can really contact the dead....Big smile
It's hard to imagine if they have really thought about the mass hysteria that's taking hold of the masses here in blighty.........

The thing is I just don't get Blogging? I mean - you have to spend serious time doing it!!!
And I don't think that The Black Forest is a wibbler - it's a grade A five star CD and is possibly better in consistency than 50% of the flower kings CD's......

I've been listening to Beware of Darkness and The Flower King nonstop.  so great!
Well, Spock's Beard were my introduction to the "3rd Wave of Prog" back in about 1997 and when Neal left them, The Flower Kings took over as my favourite current band. So, those two bands have been very important for me as well.

However, I now have another band to add to those two - Big Big Train Wink

If you haven't heard them yet, just buy "English Electric Part 1" which is currently the favourite album for 2012 on this site.

See here: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?syears=2012#list

I am currently getting into their previous album "The Underfall Yard" which is also sounding excellent.

Wink

Well I would have totally agreed with you......until I heard the last couple of albums. For me, they've really progressed from the first few neo prog albums and now represent English pastoral symphonic prog rock at it's absolute best Wink

Also, in case you didn't know, Nick D'Virgilio is now a fully fledged member and has played on the last two or three fantastic albums.

Highly recommended.

Rob.

I spend a bit of time on it, probably fifteen or twenty minutes a day.  I mentioned this to Craig, I'm working on a book and I've fallen out of the habit of writing for the past year.  My hope is that the blog gets me used to writing on a regular basis again so I can get back to the book.  I'm honestly enjoying it, and yeah, it's kind of cool that Craig is along for the ride.  Everyone has their own idea of fun, I enjoy both music and writing so it's a good way to combine the two.

I will agree that The Black Forest is the best 'Agents' CD, but even so, I have trouble at times really getting into them.  I don't quite understand it, I love Jonas, Roine is fantastic, Lalle Larsson is phenomenal (and I'm pretty critical of keyboard players), Nad has a great voice.  I just don't get a lot of joy out of their compositions.  The other two CD's didn't do too much for me either.  Gus (Infandous) and I saw them a few years ago and they were fantastic live, I just don't get the same energy from their studio albums.

It's taken me years to give them another chance after their first couple of albums but you just can't ignore the tsunami of amazing reviews for the past couple of albums.

Mick's drumming and a change of vocalist has taken them up several notches in my opinion.

It's "English ElectricWink

It is an out and out winner, especially if you appreciate Selling England / W&W style Genesis.

Just look at the reviews on this site and have a listen to this:

maybe I was too hasty with the first four? - I have made the mistake of experiencing negative vibes when my expectations were set for something different than I was actually hearing....

As someone who absolutely loves Selling England and W&W style Genesis, I have to say I just don't hear it in the English Electric album.  I mean sure, the influence is there I guess (instrumentation, "Englishness"), but the music does not have the same appeal as those early Genesis albums for me, not even close.  Certainly not the "freshness" those albums had when I first heard them (and with W&W, my first listen was about 5 years ago!).

I listened to The Difference Machine repeatedly back in the year after it came out, and just could not connect with it at all, even though it seemed like something I should like.  I've heard the entire English Electric album as well, and got pretty much the same reaction.  I will say they seem quite skilled, their production is pristine, and the music is not particularly boring.  That's the best I can muster, and I really don't understand the stir they've created lately in the prog world.  They seem fairly ordinary to me, and I find it hard to get through either of those two albums without my attention drifting (a problem I never encountered with early Genesis stuff).

Hey, a little while ago someone was asking about FK side projects, and I think I failed to mention Flying Food Circus.  A project of percussionist Hasse Brunuisson (sp?).  Roine does the guitar on it (bass and some keyboards as well!).  It's as close as a FK side project gets to RIO/Avant prog, but don't let that scare you away.  It's a very fun album with a lot of great playing on it.  Anyway, I had kind of forgotten about it until someone mentioned it on the flower kings Yahoo group recently.  Going to have to pull that one out this weekend for a couple of spins.

i listened to the new BBT on spottily and i have to say that there is something more to it than the plethora of samey sylph bands out there now (magic pie, knight area, etc.).  i think i might pick it up.  love the synth solos and harmonies are excellent.  i need to get a little more used to the singer.

btw, is the singer in magic pie the same as in karmakanic?

oh, and i saw that the new Tangent is slated for early next year and is a concept album.  also, the dudes who were in Tangent have a new band coming out on inside out.  can't remember the name.  i saw it on progmagazine.com

later brothers!  off to Roland's blog!!
