Hey, Erik. That Anekdoten biography looks really nice, the Heavy Team must have approved ever since it was finished, it just strange how it was delayed until now.
I'm personally glad you liked and sticked to my small corrections, overall your biography is a full and tasteful one for a band like Anekdoten.  |

From Finland I got this interesting CD:
DISCORDIA – Utopia Perfection (***1/2)  - This new Finnish formation is rooted in 2001, after several changes the current line-up was founded in 2006 and this year (2007) Discordia has released her debut CD entitled Utopia Perfection, it was send to me as a promo by the band, thanks!
- Discordia makes adventurous and original music but although the 11 compositions (between 3 and 5 minutes) are melodic, the sound is not always accessible, you have to be up to the important role by the female singer Riikka Hänninen and male singer Tero Väänänen, they frequently colour the songs with their varied vocals, from thin to powerful. This album is layered with Riikka and Tero their vocals, in combination with the often fluent rhythms, propulsive guitar riffs and dynamic rhythm-section these vocals give an extra dimension to Discordia their unique sound. The band also use a wide range of insturments: bombastic organ in Foreseen, The Comment Of The Wise and Mighty Power Of Metal, synthesizers in Mystery Man, wailing violin and twanging acoustic guitar in As Above So Below, vibraphone and bass clarinet in Slave Planet II, propulsive guitar riffs and heavy drumming in The Group, Slave Planet I, The Comment Of The Wise and Mighty Power Of Metal and accordeon and tin-whistle in the final track Giant Dwarf. But not only the instrumentation varies, just enjoy the shifting moods and varied styles, from dreamy to bombastic and from folky or classical to symphonic rock or prog metal. I am not sure or this adventurous and unique appeals to many progheads because it’s far from mainstream prog but you can check out their website, a big hand for this new Finnish band that makes progressive rock in the true meaning of the word!

Your Anekdoten bio made very interesting reading as they are a band I want to investigate further. Unfortunately I only own their latest cd but hopefully will remedy that soon, but which one next????

About Discordia, with the first two tracks on the album I got excited and then I was somewhat disappointed as they did not continue in the same way I though they would but then towards the end of the album seemed to come back to it. Overall, a nice album, but I feel they have more "road" to cover and walk to release a more cohesive and impressive (to me) album. They should go more and dare more as they started doing in those first and last tracks in the album. Other than that, it's a pretty accessible and ear friendly album I thought. I am looking forward to their next release to see how they develop.

Nightfly, if you like their latest and want something similar, you could try the previous album Gravity (2003), the songs are even more 'simple' and alternative-influenced (of course with loads of mellotron...you can hear 2 or 3 of the tracks at their myspace page), or if you want something more experimental and bleak, you could try From Within (1999), there's a sample in the database of the title track. And of course their debut is very popular, Vemod (1993), still very much in the King Crimson vein at that point. So you really can't lose with Anekdoten if you like the Skandanavian approach, all of the albums I've heard are quite good.

Paul and Jimmy, thanks for the compliments for my Anekdoten biography and I am glad that it has lead to further investigations of this awesome band. Avestin, good view on Discordia their debut, they are promising but have to mature, I am also very curious to their next effort. About our Anton Roolaart interview, I have already lots of interesting material out of our PMs (we share Dutch roots, playing guitar, his wife loves flamenco, he has visited Nearfest and met a Gentle Giant member

Hi Erik and others, have been away from the forums (and especially this thread) for some time , due to busy schedule but also because i wanted to revealute much from what i've heard here compared to what the dinosaurs like Genesis etc did in their time. I don't have a definite take on this except that it's clear to me now that i've hugely underestimated Genesis until now...

^^haha, I find myself digging out Genesis every once in a while to see how my perception has changed and to compare them with the newer stuff I'm listening to at the time...and it's just like meeting with an old friend that you're not sure why you ever went in different directions. After exploring many different musical styles, each time I come back to Genesis I understand even more just how great they were: no matter how much I look, I don't think I'll ever find anything that tops their 70-80 period

I agree Jimmy, I guess in the seventies I just took them for granted but few bands since in the Symphonic Prog field, although some are excellent have been as exceptionally good as Genesis were in the 70's. Even The Flower Kings who I greatly admire have never been that good IMO.
