Or yes, I'm saying that as well, if "lower end systems" means the upper end of mid range.

Hi, I think the "prices" are relative, though I have some serious questions ... my receiver, that I bought in 1976 cost $400 THEN ... and it was 575W (Concept) is the name) and it lasted me some 20 plus years until if finally had its last moment. I saw a bunch of these for sale, and all of them are the cheapies ... and NONE even list the Watt'age for the receiver. I had ESS HEIL AMT 1's and they required some power, so I assume that it would have been at least the 6.5 and above, and those are very spendy. I'm not sure that most folks TODAY realize the difference between hearing something on a great stereo system as opposed to any kind of mp3 and headset ... let me tell you, that SW is nothing in comparison! In fact I like to joke that SW sounds like a halfway quality stereo system for folks that never had one and will never know the difference in quality.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

But another factor, of course, is habits, what people are used to, and it's difficult to say how much it means.

Actually, I have two music systems myself. The proper Hi-Fi for my usual music listening from my collection, and computer as a source plus active loudspeakers for listening to new-to-me music, and when I listen experimenting with making my own versions of albums which I consider to buy as CDs. The latter one is also an example of a music system which I think not so few people use today, and which is of lower quality than some of the typical systems in the '80s and '90s - and thus is lowering the price and quality of the average system today.

I have 3 systems in the house. One is still boxed, my backup NAD C315BEE and a pair of PBS bookshelf speakers. The others are my HT system, Pioneer VSX-817 with ERA Design 4 SAT speakers, JBL PSW1000 Sub, vintage Hitachi PS-12 turntable with Shure M97HE (MM) cart. and my office system which is any device (laptop, iPod, TV) plugged into a Eurorack MX602A mixer fed to my JBL LSR 2300 powered monitors. I had several systems when I first started out, constantly upgrading, but my main system from the 70's ended up something like this, (same TT as above) power by NEC Authentic Series AUA-8000 into Pioneer CS A700 speakers. I really miss that amp. Edited by JD - January 18 2023 at 19:30 |

I maybe better tell that what I've called "active loudspeakers" are powered monitors, I use as my computer speakers, which are pretty large and powerful (35W) though. And I'll have a closer look at your systems, JD. |

I think also that the vinyl revival is a factor which raises the quality and price of the average system.

Well, for my environment and circumstance they work well enough. Oddly, I've found the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has one of the best sound mixes to come out of my HT TV system. Doesn't matter who's performing, it hits on all cylinders every time.

And I would never get the very expensive stuff of my present system if I hadn't inherited a large amount of money. Edited by David_D - January 20 2023 at 06:54 |

About good memories, these are the Musical Fidelity amps which together with a Rega 3 turntable and Dali 7A loudspeakers were my first audiophile system, I bought in 1988: https://www.ricardo.ch/de/a/musical-fidelity-pre-poweramp-3a-x-p140-1163700532/ The power transistors in the power amp were of Mosfet type which were said to have sound characteristics similar to tubes, and these MF amps were the core of my monstrous, very heavy modified amp section, I've written about, and which I had in the '90s.

Actually, I kind of miss the Musical Fidelity amps too, and most in their original version: Edited by David_D - January 20 2023 at 08:00 |

^After a little research I found my receiver shown above is most likely a JVC VR-5055.

JVC seems very probable when seing the photo alone, and the rest of it sounds very well researched - anyway, looks great and reminds me of my Pioneer receiver which I had from mid-'70s to early '80s, and also have good memories of. It's probably this one: https://classicreceivers.com/pioneer-sx-535

Brilliant!! I only know of one pic I have that shows an early system I had.....I will find it and post. My first system was a Radio Shack (I think??) with BIC turntable and a Marantz Superscope cassette deck. I had that for one summer when I was in 7th grade. Our house was broken into and all that gear was taken.. Luckily they left all my records and tapes, which I still have....

So here is the only pic I know that I have of me in my room and shows part of my system. I was a sophomore in HS when we lived in New Orleans. This was summer time and I am on crutches as I played select summer baseball and I sprained my ankle.
The receiver is either a Sansui, Yamaha or Panasonic I don't remember. R2R is an Akai X-1800SD which had it's own amp because it had speakers. The silver square on the side opened up to expose the speaker. I never used it that way, always ran it thru the receiver. It also had an 8-track deck, very cool tape deck, I still have the 7" reel tapes I made. The turntable is next to it, was a Dual TT, don't remember the model. Speakers I think were from Radio Shack, I kept them on the window shelf, you can see the wire going to it. On the 3rd shelf you can see some LPs, 7" R2R boxes and I think the brown case held 8tracks and cassettes..... Fun times!!!
