I find that to be a surprisingly powerful Symphony, David and quite a change in style and pace from his 'London', befitting for the times. To think of the jauntiness of the very late Edwardian No.2, with all it's colloquial optimism... followed by a haunting homage to the fallen; four slow movements, as man's inhumanity to man is surveyed across the trenches, marked by that single, devastating 'last post' trumpet in the distance, in the final movement. Of course, his real anger was ultimately to emerge in No.4, with the rise of machines, the sole purpose of which was the destruction of humanity (how relevant still, when we see what is happening in Ukraine)... but his pastoral is strangely, disturbingly powerful.  Clap

Saw a programme about Vaughan Williams’ friendship with Holst, and it made me leave my usual prog for a while and take it in. Very moving and evocative.
