I like my TV too much to watch the RNC.  I'd be too tempted to try to jump through the screen to strangle some of them.  And all that would accomplish is a broken tv that I paid almost a grand for.

He did didn't he? Isn't that how the free market economy works - middle income people buy stuff from high income people and at various stages along the line some poor people earn some portion of that kilodollar. Wink

Some stuff you just can't make up.

Though someone could probably have made that up. Actually, someone probably already has. But you get the point of the expression.

No one I know who has taken psilocybin mushrooms (a lot of people) has ever had effects, or severe visual hallucinations even approaching what is described there. It's an unfortunate circumstance that will only bring undue scorn on an incredibly positive drug.

But still, the advice you give is sound. You should always know who you are taking drugs with and take steps to make sure the mindset is a positive as possible.

Same here Stoney, I've never heard of such a reaction either.  I'm sure there was more going on with this guy than meets the eye.

I just cut this out of a news article....

Chicago pays teachers more than any other big city in the nation. They average $76,000 per year before benefits, and want a 29-percent increase over the next two years. Emanuel and the city are offering 16 percent over four years.

ShockedAre they freakin' serious?  It is nice to see that Rahm is the man who gets to deal with these people this time.

I make $30,400 grnoss.  We got a 1.2% raise after a four year pay freeze.

That means (after taxes) I get $18.31 a more mon
th.  I'm also now teaching remedial reading with behavior problems.

Those Chicago teachers?  Who needs their greedy asses?

I don't hate teachers, but by any stretch $76K is a great average salary.  And then they want a 15% annual raise and resist attempts to reform.  So now we have even liberal local government telling the Union they are being unreasonable.  And still they walk away leaving 350,000 kids with no class, and parents with big problems.

Most people I know would be grateful for ANY raise at the moment, and these people want 29% over two years.

Hear me on this:

That they leave their children means they don't care.

They are not worthy of the position.

Confused I'd love to know where these salary figures come from and how they are calculated. I've not managed to find any reference of $76K any where except those news reports quoting the CPS figures (who claim Chicago teachers rank 2nd behind New York)

Obviously I'm not conversant with USA salary scales so I fed my job description into this site: www.indeed.com for various locations around the USA and got a rough idea that if pay-scales in the USA are comparable with the UK , ie there is a variation in pay across the country (here it's a "north-south" divide, I guess you have something similar, a teacher can also earn more in an inner city because the cost of living is higher) then the site is pretty reliable as it gives a fair indication of what I earn as an annual salary. A quick check on the UK DoE website gives a typical (not average) annual salary of $50K for Main pay-scale teacher ($58K in London), so I would expect indeed.com to give comparable figures across the USA.

So.... I put in Chicago, Il, searched for "Teacher" and got an average of $59K, and then did the same for Sioux Falls, SD ($40K), Austin, TX ($48K), Raeford, NC ($49K), Orlando, Fl ($49K), Baltimore, MD ($55K), Los Angeles, CA ($58K), Washington, DC ($64K), New York ($70K). [sorry if these aren't representative cities - I was pulling names at random using my limited geography of the USA]

To double-check that I found another employment site and they quoted similar figures: www.employmentspot.com/employment-articles/teacher-salaries-by-state/

[It does seem that Teacher pay in the USA is similar to the UK and for both big metropolitan cities and for "the rest of the country", though there is a greater disparity across the USA, and that doesn't surprise me much.]

So, based on those numbers the Chicago teachers don't appear to be that greedy because I would expect that living in Chicago isn't as cheap as living in other parts of the country but cheaper than NY or Washington and I would expect pay to reflect that. Of course that's all based upon those web-sites calculations for average teacher salaries and not the $76K quoted by the Mayor of Chicago.

I respect you research, but I think you're missing the point.  You can pay teachers millions, and students will still not perform the way politicians want them to.  It is a cultural thing.

Politicians must get out of education.

By the way Dean, if Raeford, NC and Orlando, FL have the same average salary for teachers, I'll eat my beer can.  I have taught in both school systems.  Teachers made way more in Orlando.
