I recommend:
Ain Soph. A jazz rock/fusion band from Japan. They've released many albums, but their first two (which I've heard) are masterpieces in my opinion. If you like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Canterbury, Pink Floyd and Return to Forever, this band may just be your thing. The band work so well together, all are excellent on their respective instruments. A thoroughly recommended band. There masterpiece album is "A Story of Mysterious Forest", which was released in 1980. I have Hat and Field which is perhaps as good as Forest... although I usually tend to prefer Forest...
If you like them, might I suggest Kenso as well? Japanese too and while not too similar, I think it should appeal to you as well. I especially like Kenso II
I will soon order from Greg as well, only it will be probably some krautorck.

I prefer Forest to Hat and Field, but they're both excellent. You should try Ride on a Camel as well. The sound quality isn't the best, but some of the compositions were great. There is a 24 minute version of A Story of Mysterious Forest, which is excellent. This is pre-Ain Soph material as well.
All the material on Ride on a Camel was re-recorded by a reformed band in the 1980s and I've not heard it all yet. Yes, I've heard of Kenso. Great Walker has some of their albums too (but 3 separate releases for some albums - can you recommend a specific one?), so I may purchase their debut. Edited by Geck0 - September 18 2006 at 21:59 |
