You got her, James. ![Clap Clap](smileys/smiley32.gif) An explanation of a few hints: "Petra" is the female version of "Peter", who of course was the rock on which the church was built; on Kelly the Green Party was built. The character from the novella is Michael Kohlhaas, an historical figure who rebelled when two of his horses were confiscated; his name is proverbial in German for people who rebel because of a righteous cause. Heinrich von Kleist wrote a drama about him. Kleist and his wife committed suicide by shooting together, a situation quite similar to the deaths of Petra Kelly and Gert Bastian, Kelly's life partner, though the exact circumstances of her death are not clear; it may as well be that Bastian murdered her and committed suicide afterwards.

I did have one ready but I've forgotten who it was, so I need to find them again.

You forgot one important thing, Friede: The Greek word πέτρα (petra) means "stone". So it’s actually a pun in the Bible.

I did not mention it, but I did not forget it. Hence words
like "petrified", "turned into stone", or "petroleum", "stone oil". My first hint directly referred to the meaning of her name.

How can a fictional being be deceased? The book is out of print?

They died in the fiction.
Much like Gregor Samsa dies in Metamorphosis.

I would not call fictional characters "deceased" if they die in the book or movie ro whatever. Read the book again, and they come back to life.
Is the character from a book?

Not media, as such. It's difficult to explain without giving a huge clue away.
Not comics.
I shall say this though: since the Internet has become what it has, this "person" has become a bit more well known.
Having said that, I hadn't heard of him before. Hopefully that won't make it too difficult.
I shall also add another clue: this fictional person was first mentioned in a 1951 short-story published in Collier's written by a Science Fiction author.
So yes, you could say he was in a story but he's far more known in other media, such as the Internet.

The 1961-date irritates me a bit, else I would have guessed Kilgore Trout.

And I thought about George Kilroy but he doesn’t fit either. Isaac Asimov?

I think James will understand that I asked about the author and not the character. I will rephrase it, though: Was the story written by Isaac Asimov?

Not Asimov as the author, no. The story he is first mentioned in (the one also mentioned above and published in Collier's) was also published in a Science Fiction Anthology from 1952 "Edited" (with an Introduction) by a very famous Science Fiction author.
It's not Kilgore Trout either.
You're on the right lines with George Kilroy (presumably you meant "Kilroy was here" Kilroy?).

i think I’ve found him: Rudolph Fentz?
EDIT: Yes, that was the Kilroy I meant, but he didn’t fit for several reasons.
