Eduard Douwes Dekker (2 March 1820 – 19 February 1887), better known by his pen name Multatuli. Famous for his satirical novel Max Havelaar. I haven’t found out about the 37 Laurel Canal hint, though.

 Well done again! It is indeed Eduard Douwes Dekker, aka Multatuli.Ik ben makelaar in koffij, en woon op de Lauriergracht, No 37. (I am a broker in coffee, and live at Laurel Canal, No. 37), the canonical opening sentence of Max Havelaar, a masterpiece of Dutch literature. Note: In present days, we spell it koffie instead of koffij.
