I thought I had at least half of his fingerprint but I was obviously wrong. Was he British?

No, he was not British.
Neither German, although he died in Germany.

No, he had nothing to do with van Gogh.
His father was a ship's captain.

So "The Sower" didn’t lead me to the right field … a sailor?

Eduard Douwes Dekker (2 March 1820 – 19 February 1887), better known by his pen name Multatuli. Famous for his satirical novel Max Havelaar. I haven’t found out about the 37 Laurel Canal hint, though.

I am a coffee-broker, and live at No. 37 Lauriergracht. |

![]() Ik ben makelaar in koffij, en woon op de Lauriergracht, No 37. (I am a broker in coffee, and live at Laurel Canal, No. 37), the canonical opening sentence of Max Havelaar, a masterpiece of Dutch literature. Note: In present days, we spell it koffie instead of koffij.

I found the start of Max Havelaar online. Seems like another book I have to read before I die.
Male, deceased. |

The entire Max Havelaar in English can be found here. Only the 194 annotations I have in my Dutch 1917 edition are lacking. Did this person die before 1901? Edited by someone_else - May 21 2012 at 04:13 |
