Been enjoying this art rock / neo prog from UK band Riversea, their new album The Tide. Very polished & lush English Prog, recommended for those who like the softer side of prog and one of the better albums I have heard this year. |

I am not certain you can call new albums "obscure". whether a new album is obscure or not is something that has to be decided by time

Yes, this thread has morphed into postings of new release and favourites only some obscure. I'm OK with that but it would be good to hear about older obscure releases as well.

Sure you can. The word isn't dependent on a time value. There could be an album released this year in the middle of Mongolia that no one outside that village will hear. That is still obscure. ob新cure(ŏb-skyo͝or′, əb-)adj. ob新cur搪r, ob新cur搪st 1. Deficient in light; dark: the obscure depths of a cave. 2. a. So faintly perceptible as to lack clear delineation; indistinct: an obscure figure inthe fog. b. Indistinctly heard; faint. c. Linguistics Having the reduced, neutral sound represented by schwa (ə). 3. a. Far from centers of human population: an obscure village. b. Out of sight; hidden: an obscure retreat. 4. Not readily noticed or seen; inconspicuous: an obscure flaw. 5. Of undistinguished or humble station or reputation: an obscure poet; an obscure family. 6. Not clearly understood or expressed; ambiguous or vague: Some say that Blake's styleis obscure and complex. See Synonyms at ambiguous. tr.v. ob新cured, ob新cur搏ng, ob新cures 1. To make dim, indistinct, or impossible to see: "His face was obscured in shadow"(Rosemary Mahoney). See Synonyms at block. 2. To make difficult to discern mentally or understand: The meaning of the text wasobscured by its difficult language. 3. To diminish the stature of; overshadow or detract from: "[His] character was sorepellent that it has obscured his historical role" (David Rains Wallace). 4. Linguistics To reduce (a vowel) to the neutral sound represented by schwa (ə). n. Something obscure or unknown. |

^ what Jean meant was that Phideauxfan just posts here all new albums he discovers, new bands. While this is a good idea, maybe it's not the right thread.
It seems people are more interested in less known bands of the past. I am always glad to discover 70s prog I haven't heard before :))

OK what about some obscure bands from the past? When I was growing up in the 70's my parents weren't into prog (with the exception of Jethro Tull and later Genesis that got regular airplay in the house....) and I only got exposed to prog in the late 70's through friends (e.g. Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre) then the 80's hit with electronica and new wave with bands like Ultravox, Kraftwerk, The Cure, Tears for Fears, The Fixx etc. Tears for Fears for example I consider progressive with a leaning to pop, and underrated. I struggle with the earlier 70's prog rock 'classics' (e.g. early Genesis) as I have mentioned a few times before but I'm always open to trying music I haven't heard before. I guess my musical tastes evolved in my teenage years when early 70's rock was out of favour and even today I will gravitate towards music that has similar themes to Pink Floyd, Tears for Fears and ilk (e.g. Porcupine Tree). |

Well, what you meant and what the word OBSCURE means are opposing in nature. I get where you're coming from but i simply don't buy it. As an unwritten rule in prog, obscure really does mean "from the vaults, way back in the golden era of the 70s," however if the word is used in all its subtleties, it means anything not in the view of the masses and therefore it can indeed mean that something modern, even recorded today can be obscure, technically speaking. Come on, German is the most technically efficient language in the world. You must know what i'm talking about!

Norwegian progressive black metal band Enslaved with a cover of an old Royksopp song. Some cookie monster vocals but done tastefully...
