Naw that makes sense. I actually got my copy two weeks in advance of the release anyway. How? I still don't know I ordered the day pre-orders were started. I even got the prog world orchestra cd almost three weeks ago. I'm so happy!!!
Yeah Momentum is solid, I love the epic at the end so much and the two opening tracks are amazing too!!

Yep, on the first one and a bit spins I think I feel the same as you! The first two tracks were terrific, middle two solid if just a little bland, and the epic was very great as well, you can still here Neal pushing himself towards some different sounds! I'll update over the next few days how I go!

I've always loved reading all the comments from you guys on this thread but haven't taken the dive myself 'til now!

Neal's one of the hardest working guys in prog, and his sheer musical skills and melodic talent are undeniable!

Yeah hardest working and extremely humble. He is one of my favorite persons ever. Read his Testimony book if you get the chance so so so good!!!

Just at work today I was wearing my Neal Morse Testimoney 2 t-shirt - Me spreading the `word of Morse', I suppose, although no-one really has much of an idea who he is down here!

I freaked out yesterday when reading the CD booklet for `Momentum' and Neal says in the back that he became inspired watching the Pastor of the Hillsong Church in Ausralia, and I was like "WHAT?! Where did he see that?! Was Neal actually IN Australia?! Does he tour here, and the information has somehow eluded me?!" etc etc

I would be seriously kicking myself if he somehow snuck into my own backyard and I totally missed it!

PS - No chance your Username is taken from that wonderful `DOM - Edge of Time' album, is it?!

Newly registered forum member here! I've just spent ages reading through this thread and would like to add my name to the list of people who love Neal Morse and his music. I've been a fan for about 3 or 4 years, since someone on another forum introduced me to Transatlantic. I'm a Christian myself so when I heard that Neal was a Christian I decided to investigate his solo stuff and I was well impressed. I now have most of his solo albums from One onwards (only missing Lifeline, which I'm not too bothered about since it didn't get good reviews and I have the live So Many Roads album which includes several tracks off Lifeline). I intend to get Testimony 1 eventually to complete my collection. My favourite Neal solo albums in order are

As for Neal's last 2 releases, Flying Colors and Momemtum, I love them both. I'm surprised the Flying Colors album hasn't been mentioned much on this thread. Maybe it's because it's a collaboration, but I suspect Neal did a lot of the writing on it. On Momentum I am going to differ from some previous comments and say that I think Freak is a great song. The weakest song IMO is Smoke and Mirrors, and I think World Witout End could have been 5 minutes shorter.
 
Finally, I am very excited that I'm going to see Neal plus The Flower Kings in March! I live in the UK and Neal doesn't play here very often so I'm glad that I can get to the gig in Wolverhampton. I did see him with Transatlantic on the Whirlwind Tour and what a night that was.
 
Also have the Sola Scriptura DVD and Neal's book - and I can recommend both.

well i'm jealous as hell you're seeing neal and TFK.  that would be so great! 

i also like seeds of gold, but i'm partial to bridge across forever.  i recently picked up the first transatlantic and last and cannot get into them.  a little neal does a lot for me.  i guess i'm a bit burned out.  as far as flying colors goes, it had it's moments, but i just didn't like the whole thing.  they are writing for a new album to released this year, so there's that.

do you have any of neal's spocks beard stuff?  if not, the first 3 albums and the 5th are basically thirdwave prog masterpieces.

  I have Snow and consider it OK but I prefer Neal's solo and Transatlantic stuff. I've heard good reports about V and I'll probably get that sometime but I haven't really heard much of the SB stuff.

come over to the flower kings thread.  we talk about all things Neal there and anything remotely related.  it's kind of a forum within a forum.

if you haven't heard much of SB, well, you're in for a treat.  there's even some not so veiled christian lyrics there too. 
i just posted a note from roine over on that thread giving some more info about the impending tour.  should be amazing with the transatlantic encore.  my hunch is that pete from marillion will show up for a few shows making it a complete TA reunion...they're writing and recording this year too.  so it's a good time to be had!

Welcome AlanB!  As Zumacraig mentioned, I too am jealous of you seeing Neal and TFK together.
 
I started with Neal's first solo prog effort, Testimony I and loved it.   Later I would like some of his other works better, such as One and ? but have all of them.
 
I have Spocks Beard "V" and is very good, my fav by them.
 
Other Christian related bands you might enjoy are Glass Hammer, Ajalon (features Randy George of Neal's band), Salem Hill, Akacia, Glass Harp (features an amazing guitarist Phil Keaggy who played on Neal's One LP) and as mentioned Flower Kings.  There are others as well but these are the few that popped to mind while responding.  Neal of course is on top with TFK and Glass Hammer close behind IMHO.

I actually have a couple of Phil Keaggy albums plus one by Glass Harp (which I remember having to buy as an import). They're on vinyl so not really played anymore - I've had them since the late 70s. There is a bit of Glass Harp on Youtube but sadly the sound quality isn't great.
 
Looking forward to hearing the Flower Kings. I'm not too familiar with their stuff though I've heard a few songs on Youtube. The song called "The Flower King" sounds pretty good, though I think it was written before the band was formed.

flower kings are not a christian band.  the song flower king is from roine stolt's early 90s solo album by the same name.  the players on that album became the flower kings and put out Back in the World of Adventures as their first album  roine stolt is a mad genius and has put out so much stuff and guested on so much stuff it's ridiculous.  they are all well worth exploring.

^ Thats why I put "related" in my reference to those other bands as TFK and Roine's lyrics are typically positive and upbeat, but no I would not classify them as a Christian band either and hope that I did not mislead anyone.  They are close and I think get thrown in the mix due to Roine's relationship with Neal.
 
I don't think I have ever seen a more hard working muscian than Roine, so many double albums with TFK, solo, Transaltlantic, etc...
 
I also forgot to mention to AlanB one of my favorite composers, Kerry Livgren of Kansas fame, which you most likely know, but his last/latest band Proto-Kaw is another that you could put in that category.

i've been meaning to check out proto-kaw.  

yeah, roine definitely alludes to god in his lyrics.  one thing i get tired of in neal's lyrics is the 'new beginning' lyrics.  it's all about weathering the storm and coming out the other side.  Momentum and Flying Colors cover this theme too.  i guess that's his shtick.  his theology is quite infantile.

neal and Flower kings are touring together with mike portnoy this spring.  looks like a transatlantic encore.

I feel so jealous of those able to watch the magic of the Neal Morse band and TFK with a TA encore!!
BTW, I always had this doubt.
Do Randy George and Mike Portnoy have the independence in their bass work/drumming or does Neal Morse actually come up with the bass/drum part ideas and ask them to play it for his solo albums?
I think Randy George and Portnoy have a say in the writing process or else, Morse could simply have played everything by himself  Tongue

I saw both NM and TFK last year, so I'm not that disappointed that they are not coming to Finland this time. Both gigs were wonderful and very memorable. Tongue Neal pulled The Creation and Sola Medley and Flower Kings did Numbers and The Truth Will Set You Free, so the epicness level was pretty acceptably reached. I hope that TA would come here some day.. that would be a dream come true. Or I'll just have to travel to Germany etc. for them, for the heck of it.
