Personally, I find "the dark" fascinating. Not really dark music or dark movies, just the very concept of darkness itself. Also, I sometimes listen to Coil, so I very much "like" what I find ridiculously scary.

The first song was the single, so I didn't really care, but the second song has a really nice groove to it.

Don't do it. It actually sounds mellow in a neo-prog way, Rudess sounds like a guy playing smooth jazz on a cruise ship, and Petrucci is still playing those faux nu metal riffs.

I'm actually liking it, though they still do the annoying technical show-off moves. The riffs seem pretty solid to me, and I like cruise ship jazz.
