Not exactly … his books were more for other academics, I think, but still he wrote some books that are fairly famous (at least among people interested in these things).

Sleepy... I am a bit tired of querying these philosphers of whom I know hardly anything at all.

Nevertheless I found one African-born European philosopher who died in the 21st century at an age between 60 and 80:
Jacques Derrida (1930-2004), who was French and born in Algeria.

So I guess this is the one.

ClapClapClap

Derrida is the man! He held a lecture in Oslo some 20 years ago. If I remember correctly, he talked about the impossibility of being bilingual. It was rather difficult to grasp …

He has written more than 40 books. The most famous is probably Of Grammatology:

If you read French, you could read it in original which is always better, of course.

If you want an easy introduction, try Derrida for Beginners by Jim Powell.

And I’m no expert at all. I find him fascinating, but quited dense and not always easy to follow. I read his Plato’s Pharmacy many years ago when I studied literature:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plato%27s_Pharmacy#As_a_Derridian_term

Good luck!

(PS I must admit that I was impressed by someone_else when he found the right answer without more information. Bravo!)

Not necessarily. Of course he appeared quite often on TV for some time.
